"Unquestionably one of the Australian dance music industry’s most recognisable and iconic figures, we could think of no better recipient of the brand new inthemix50 Lifetime Achievement award in its debut year.
Mark James has been in the game for well over 20 years. His company Future Entertainment was launched in 1993 and is one of Australia's most successful event promoters, having revolutionised the local festival market with brands like Summadayze and Future Music Festival touring the country and attracting tens of thousands of punters.
He is responsible for putting on some of Melbourne's first dance parties back in the 80s, with DJs like Sasha and Carl Cox appearing well before they were the household names we know and love today, and he has also brought some of the world's most respected clubbing brands to Australian shores, including Gatecrasher, Godskitchen, Renaissance and Global Underground.
Not only a promoter, Mark has also maintained a booming career as a DJ and producer. Name a DJ or dance act, and there's a 99% chance Mark has played alongside them at one point in his career. In the early 90s he grabbed chart success as part of the production outfit Base Culture, and he's also worked in the studio with Paul Oakenfold, Hybrid, John 00 Fleming and many more.
"I don’t do anything I do for the awards or to see my name in the paper," Mark has said in the past, when asked what drives his unrelenting passion and enthusiasm for dance music, nightclubs and festivals. "Be it promoting, DJing or producing, at the end of the day what puts a smile on my face and makes it all worth while is to see the crowd having a great time.""
