Jazzanova are a true Berlin mainstay. In addition to countless productions and remixes, the collective has steered its Sonar Kollektiv label to ‘untouchable’ status. Celebrating a decade of fine releases this year, the imprint alumni includes Âme, Dixon, Fat Freddys Drop, Georg Levin, Robag Wruhme and most prolifically, the bosses themselves.
Despite their esteemed reputation, there’s still some confusion about what Jazzanova actually is. One of the common misconceptions is that they’re a live act, which has never been the case (although that might change after the new album arrives). There’s also puzzlement over how many people make up the group (six in total), and what exactly each member does. One thing’s for certain, though: the studio results are always good. Jazzanova’s next studio album is not far off completion, and has been recorded alternatively in Amsterdam and Berlin with stellar guest musicians like Phonte of Little Brother, Paul Randolph, Ben Westbeech and José James.
Jürgen von Knoblauch is representing Jazzanova on this tour of Australia for ‘The Berlin Sessions’, and he’s itching to show off the latest Sonar Kollektiv signings. Here ITM’s Jack Tregoning talks to the DJ/producer about the new record, achieving label longevity and why James Bond has come knocking.
Jazzanova headlines ‘The Berlin Sessions’ alongside fellow Berlin-based luminaries Heiko Laux and Quarion at the following shows…
