When witnessing a Krush show for the first time it seemed very hard to anticipate what a man of such insight was going to pull out, performing to a full house at one of the most respected and consistent parties in the land … 33 1/3.
On arrival I was greeted by Khalil & Gsan laying down a very appropriate flow with some leftfield, quirk hip hop and some tightly packed cuts to boot.
My main reason for being early was to check what Ransom had to offer at a gig of this calibre. There was never a doubt he couldn’t maintain a sweet groove for what was to come and he did just that. Playing an eclectic mix of old school disco / funk and hip hop and throwin’ it round the yard like a true hip veteran.
Half way through Ransom’s set the place was rammed. It certainly didn’t seem like a Sunday evening from the mood of the audience, everyone was up for a full-blown block rockin’ party. Although I was under the impression that no-one was really sure what to expect from Krush.
He took to the stage very modestly and killed Ransoms last track with some tweaked out Samurai ambience. He moved into leftfield ground, as only Krush can, with his own flavour of beats and creating some amazingly bugged out sounds with a now very rare Vestax PMC-20SL.
His mix was filmed in real time and viewed on screens either side of the stage so everyone in the room could witness the skill and precision of this real live turntablist / composer. This captivated everyone in the room drawing us into some crazy Krush like trance. His generated sounds where full and real. He does’nt just take a sound or break because it sounds cool. They are genuine to the soul and sincere to the artist.
This was the first time many had witnessed a dj produce and create on a mixer like this. I’m sure it would have made most dj’s in the room think either: hey, I’ve gotta start spending some crazy hours alone with my crate; or I need one of those mixers.
Krush then went on to mesmerise the audience with some classic material from Meiso and Holonic, amongst others. His self made breakdowns where simply jaw-dropping, using traditional Japanese instrument samples and haunting melodies to create a mode of absolute bliss.
I felt sorry, yet humoured by the audience that where mashed and there for a block rockin’ party, but instead received the best technical wizardry and splendour they’ll never remember. Big ups to 33 1/3 for yet another memorable experience.
