It’s been raining in Sydney for almost a month now, and for a month we’ve needed some good excuses to escape the warmth of home, brave the cold and be guaranteed a damn good night out. And in true five dollar fun, Evolve at Uber last Friday night, proved to be just what the doctor ordered.

V Bar has been known to come through with the goods when it comes to drum n’ bass, shown by their Sunday night Airborne events. Cocktails and d’n’b? Sure, why not. And Uber downstairs continued this chilled out atmosphere in top form- comfy couches, a well stocked bar, and no toilet queues to speak of. Watching a familiar mish-mash of regulars (“didn’t I see you at DJ Craze? 50/50? Moving Through Air?” etc) and newbies filter in, we sat back and listened to DJs LoS and Cause warm up the room with ease.

Then enter the Vice Versa team. Huge hype has been growing about this Sydney duo who’ve had LTJ Bukem playin’ their tunes all throughout London town, whilst not revealing his sources (naturally). The pulse was well and truly set as the crowd made their way onto the dance floor, and got down to some of the smoothest mixes I’ve heard in a while. With a glitch-free sound system, Uber ensured these boys were mixing and MCing away in top form, and the crowd were lapping it up. No stop-starting here, just continuous beats and wicked tunes. “Driving soulful drum and bass” said the flyer…and they were definitely delivering. So it was no surprise at one am when local DJ Shuey took to the decks, to see the crowd sticking around.

And stick around they did. None of the usual post-headliner-fade-out could be seen- the dance floor stayed well and truly packed. Continuing the night, Shuey proved that d’n’b can get dark without getting dirty. I’ve never seen such a small square of dance space utilised any better than by this crowd. As Polaris finished up the night, there were plenty of happy faces to be seen (and also some very sweaty and satisfied ones, too).
