After a late finish at work and with no trains running on the Joondalup Line, I managed to make a late arrival at Metro City just after midnight, for the anxiously awaited Slinky.

On entrance, I noticed the club wasn’t its usual full-house Metro’s event. The main floor was packed, and the main centre balcony had a number of people on it, but the rest of the levels and balconies were closed off.

Although this was a very small event for Metro City, it did not seem to affect the mood of the crowd. Everyone seemed to be in high spirits and the dance floor was filled with many different people – those with glowsticks, fluffy leg warmers, crazy costumes and even a few guys with no shirts on.

The first act I saw was Signum, this duet played from midnight to 2am. These two Hollanders mixed a great set of trance records. My friends and I were walking around the venue, trying to find people until we heard “You’re so cool. You’re so cool. You’re so cool…” (Solarcoaster) and this was when we were instantly drawn to the dance floor. This song changed my mood from a very tired one to an excited mood that was filled with so much energy that I couldn’t seem to keep my feet still, and my arms just wouldn’t stop waving around in time with the beats. It also seemed to lift the moods of the rest of the crowd to even higher than before.

The next DJ onstage was Slinky Resident Dave Lee, who played from 2am to 3am. His set included some great trance tunes with lots of breakdowns. These were great build-ups that got the crowd very excited. A remix of Faithless’ Insomnia was a well-remembered song that was played by Lee. By this stage the crowd was jumping around and the music just seemed to keep on getting better and better. The smell of medic spray seemed to become a lot stronger and, although I am sure that it wasn’t the users’ intentions, it actually began to clear my head cold, allowing me to dance even harder than I could before. As I looked around the crowd I saw many people hugging and holding onto each other – it is amazing how a great atmosphere and great music can make people so happy and accepting of others.

Lisa Lashes was the next DJ onstage and she made a great entrance. She was very energetic and really seemed to work well with the crowd. She remixed Olive’s You’re Not Alone and Tony de Vit’s classic hard-house track The Dawn. Throughout her set she was dancing around, autographing things for people, asking people in the crowd to light her cigarettes, and even at one stage was pulling faces for a photographer who was taking her picture. I had not heard her previous work before but I have to admit that she was very good at what she did and she had to be best act of the night. There is nothing better than a DJ who can mix some great tunes at the same time as entertaining the crowd. Not many DJs can do it, but she seemed to do it with such ease.

At about 4:30am my friends and I had to leave the venue before I collapsed into a heap on the dance floor. I would loved to have stayed till the end of the event but the energy drinks weren’t working and the combination of dancing non-stop for over four hours and the long day at work would not allow my legs to keep up the work. We slowly exited the building whilst talking about the great night that was had by all.

The lights were Metro’s usual quality and the music was pumping loud and hard, so loud that my ears were ringing the entire trip home.

Overall, Slinky was a top night and had it not been exam time for many students as well as the night chosen for “The Greening of the Freeway”, which affected the running of trains on the Joondalup Line, I am sure the crowd would have been a lot bigger

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
