I arrived at Castles a little later than expected due to the previous nights high jinks. But when I decended the stairs into the den like Castles I was met with a techno onslaught from A.K.A. His set was almost Swarm like with the acidic squelches and beeps and extra solid bass kicks normally associated with the likes of Chris Liberator and The Geezer. A highlight of the set for me was the Rolando track jaguar which is a track I love and AKA’s hard hitting mix set the tone of the night beautifully for me.
As the time approached 1am the crowd was still relatively small. I think this can be put down to a number of factors including a cold winters night and a plethora of other quality techno events which had occured over the weekend and had succeded in splitting the small but loyal techno crowd across a number of venues. Thus Tampered was left with an intimate but up for it crowd.
At 1am Marshall hit the decks and continued the techno onslaught although in a more straight up style. The dance floor was well populated but never too packed allowing for plenty of wild and crazy dance moves.
Marshall was followed by a live set from Sasquelch. I have been trying to see these guys for at least 12 months but circumstance has always been against me. I will tell you it was well worth the wait as they ripped out a brilliant set of live techno that had the dancefloor going wild despite the smallish numbers.
Next up was a back to back set from Rip and Manson. These guys picked up where Sasquelch left off and took it harder. By this stage I was fading fast and two nights of solid high quality techno. Then as I was sitting back enjoying a beer I heard the distinctive sounds of Vanilla Ice. As Ice Ice Baby pumped out of the system I knew that the booty boys had arrived.
Gmo & Deft moved the party on from the techno blitz of early in classice booty territory. The change on the dancefloor was papable. The mood lightened and you could see big cheesy grins alround as the boys dropped some classics such as Ass & Titties from DJ Assault and then I was taken back to the Saturday nights of my younger days at the famous Bowral hotel when the Acca Dacca classic Shook me all night long was dropped. The crowd sang along like it was a rum fuelled B&S.
The night began to wind down as Gonzo took to the decks with a set of Reggae originals straight from Jamaica, ably assisted by MC Curry. This was my first experiance of reggae in a club environment and after two big nights out was just what the doctor ordered. A nice reggae wind down after a massive weekend of high quality techno.
As my friends and I had been saying all weekend there were just three to describe it ‘Awesome Awesome Awesome’! Big thanks to the Tampered crew for giving us something a bit different in the Sydney Techno scene.
