I quickly established myself as one very suave individual by leaning on the inkpad at the front desk as I talked to three of the staff at Globe and covering half of my right arm in black ink. After we all pretended not to notice that I had done this, I proceeded inside. For most of the night, Gav Fisher and Jay Walker were tag teaming on the decks, which gave interesting variations in the style of play. If – like me, prior to this – you have never been to Globe then you would not have known what an open club it is. I say that, because unlike some clubs where the DJ’s are in a no-go area, it is very easy to step up and chat to the DJ’s whenever you like. This is how I came to have a very nice chat – of which he forbid me to quote him on any topic – with Jay Walker, from whom I learned was one of the three organisers of the event, along with Gav Fisher and a guy who had been sitting at the front desk when I embarrassed myself. Jay told me that as it was the first week back at university, they had expected a small turnout and had thus only opened one level for the night. But the placed was nicely filled, with there being enough people there to fill the dance floor and surrounding areas without being packed so tightly you couldn’t move or that you had to wait twenty minutes for a drink.
As I explored the Globe complex, I found an interesting alcove around near the cigarette machine where my friends and I settled for some of the night and had the pleasure of listening to someone practice their singing – albeit not even attempting to match the music that surrounded us – but it was a pleasant sight all the same. This little area was a good place to sit and chat but still enjoy the great music that was being pumped out by the DJ’s.
I was disappointed to notice, early in the evening, that Illya (who is, for those of you who didn’t read my last review, my favourite DJ) had the final set, starting at 4:30. However, I did have a good opportunity to chat to Illya before his set, something I missed last time I saw him. Illya is not only one of the top DJ’s around, something many of you may already know, but he is also very down-to-earth. When I asked Illya for a description of Globe, he promptly replied “F#cking Tops!” which I thought was an accurate description, and would, I am sure, be fulfilled on a night with both levels operating.
Illya had, as usual, a great set and I was sorry that it was not very long, but next time I go, I will be sure to I enjoy a longer set. And I will be back. Oh yes. I will be back. I would highly recommend Toasted to anyone looking for a great night out clubbing with a nice mix and house and breaks.
Stand Out Track: “Electric Disco” – Plump DJ’s
Stand Out DJ – Illya, even though his set was short. Jay Walker was also very good, I will be keeping an eye out for him.
