The Teriyaki team, along with headline act American Woody McBride , served Melbourne up another piping hot plate of quality techno, and in doing so kept the Teriyaki Institution rolling on.
Sadly, due to rounding friends up, I didn’t hit Teriyaki until after one. The night kicked off at 11pm to a mix up, with Teriyaki co-organiser and supreme overlord Dee Dee hitting the decks just after midnight. As usual the night kicked off well, and from all reports both the mix up, and Dee
Dee’s set produced plenty of smiles and shaking booties.
Thankfully I rocked up in time to catch the ever beautiful and talented Disko Pussy ripping the decks up with her undeniable enthusiasm and flare. She continually glances out to the crowd to capture and control the mood, which is always upbeat and full of energy. Disko Pussy’s sets continue to mature, and continue to get punters on the dance floor and working it.
The USA’s Woody McBride (DJ Esp) stepped to the decks to a big cheer. He has a long history with Teriyaki going back many years, also inviting the Tezza residents in Dee Dee, Slieker and Slack to tour the US in 1999 for the Wall of Base parties. He whipped up a stomping set of acid tech, laced with some great auditory effects that had me staring at the ceiling wondering where they were coming from. You wont hear these type of sets all that often, and it’s therefore refreshing to hear something just that little bit different
and really quite old school. Even Woody completely stuffing up a mix between two tracks didn’t dampen the spirit.
Slack and Slieker carried us into the morning which kept the hardcore’s on the floor and dancing strong. These guys both have years in the techno scene behind them, and of course, it shows. I checked the boys in the headmuff room, which hosted Suspect, Buff Rodgers, Pixelton, Puff wombe and Revnosey, and they all seemed to be keeping the chilled out room as happy as larry. The final scratch was apparently the first time Disko Pussy has been included, which I was all for, although I’m sure I’ve seen her up there around 7am before!
The side performances that make Teriyaki that little bit jilted and a bit of a laugh came from a slightly insane and semi stripping Miss Regal, as well as a roaming jester. Several screens showing up all kinds off images kept the eyes fed, and a nice touch this month was a big screen displaying a
camera mounted on the turntables, which was great to stand and watch as your fav DJ flexed the decks.
Room wasn’t as full as I had expected it to be for a Teriyaki night which was also hosting an international, and that was a bit saddening. This gig is now truly part of Melbourne’s techno scene, and it really should get more of the support it richly deserves. Room was damn hot temperature wise, the
hottest I have ever felt it, but that didn’t seem to deter the dancing. Pencil in October 3rd for the next Teriyaki, you and your freinds will not be dissapointed!
