As we walked in past security, a large German Shepard security dog stuck its head up and looked at us, this confirmed my earlier thoughts and made me think that this was a less than safe venue for such an event.
We were directed to go up to the fourth flour of the building (by means of a rickety old lift that at any time was threatening to break down,) to do so, we had to walk past a cluster of poker machines with impassive patrons depositing their coins mindlessly. Needless to say, we were attracting many odd looks, as we were obviously dressed inappropriately for the type of regular behavior that goes on at the Mandarin club on a Saturday night.
We finally arrived at the door of what would be our territory for the next however many hours it took for us to have a good time. A black sheet masked what was inside, a lack of clientele and an atmosphere that was less than stimulating illustrated by Asian style décor consisting of square roof motifs all set off by an out of time green laser!
We could still hear the second act of the night; Bleepin J Squawkins (live set) tearing it up, their set was fantastic but unfortunately we didn’t hear the entire set. They managed to get a fair few people on the dance floor moving around to the electro-tech beats and bleeps of this genre of music. All in all, a brilliant set that had everyone entertained.
The third set of the night was Chromatic who had the 12-1 time slot. Chromatic came out with a deep and minimal set, which was good for that time of the night but after the brilliance of Bleepin J Squawkins perhaps not as appreciated as it should have been. To someone like me, who is not into minimal at all, the set sounded somewhat repetitive and boring, however, I have been told by many people who enjoy this type of techno, that Chromatic did indeed play a great set.
Unfortunately the room had a far larger capacity than the amount of people that actually bothered to turn up to this occasion, leaving everyone with a sense of vast empty space. At this stage we were still holding our breath for a larger crowd to cultivate out of thin air. The final set of the night 1-4 (close) was Marshall Vs AKA Vs Tom Haze Vs Dartech on four decks. This set was ABSOLUTELY fantastic, well done guys you made our night!!! The mixing side of things got very technical (or appeared to) with the boys having 15min intervals each then chopping and changing between themselves. Everything ran amazingly smoothly owing to the skills of all four DJs. There was a large extent of crossing different types of techno beats, which sounded fantastic.
All in all we had a great night. The venue was (as I thought it might have been) a little on the tacky side but generally speaking the music made up for it. The crowd was disappointing, but those who were in attendance were making the most of what ended up being a good night.
Unfortunately, Metropolis; Neo Tokyo was shut down early (4am) with the bar closing at 3am. For someone like me who perhaps has an untrained ear when it comes to this genre of music (but is learning very quickly), electro-tech can often appear to be a repetitive series of bleeps, however, I had a great time and commended the DJs on a great performance, I would definitely attend this type of party again.
