What did Clubology have to offer? Well, there were percussionists, didgeridoo players, dancers, masseuses, an interesting lineup and a friendly and open atmosphere. But where was everybody? Unfortunately the crowd just wasn’t there to enjoy it. Why? I don’t know, I can however suggest that the week before a long weekend always seems to be a quieter one. Also, quite a few people suggested to me that it was a DJ issue, and for that reason I’m going into the following.
What does the Sydney punter look for these days? The Clubology lineup consisted of Michael Christopher (Miami) Sample Gee (NZ) Liquid M (LIVE) Flipside (Godskitchen, Slinky) and Pete Heery (Transmission, Plastic). I have to say I hadn’t heard of Michael Christopher before, nor had anyone else I knew, but it wasn’t hard to find out that the guy has played alongside DJ Tiesto, Judge Jules and Carl Cox, and has played in clubs and at parties all over the Northern Hemisphere.
I would have thought that would be enough for people to be curious. This is why I pose this question, is Sydney so stuck in the rut of the instantly familiar that something new just isn’t attractive? It’s just a question folks so if you’re keen to comment go right ahead, I’d really like to know what you think.
Then there was Sample Gee who came fifth in the Technics Top50 DJ Poll. The guy is a bit of an institution in New Zealand, and, again I admit that the first time I’d heard of him was when I saw his position in the Poll. But again it roused some curiosity, well in me anyway, that’s why I wanted to take a look.
Liquid M who were accompanied by Damien Church on didgeridoo, should be packing the punters through the door. These guys are local, play a wicked live set and create the kind of vibe that Infusion are famous for. Then there was Flipside, who’s name has been about in the Sydney dance scene for a while now, and Pete Heery, who again, I hadn’t heard of but thats exactly why I wanted to go.
It’s not easy for a DJ to play to their best when they haven’t got that energy happening on the floor, those that were there were happy and enthusiastic, however there was plenty of space to fill to get a vibe really happening. None of the DJ’s failed to please, although toward the end a few tracks started to drift from the epic trance theme to slightly dated sounds that now verge on the comercial, but lets face it, you can’t please all of the people all of the time.
My heart goes out to the promoters who as far as I’m concerned gave it their best. I’ll be at the next event that FEWW Productions stage, because I think they can offer qualities that are lacking in many Sydney events. As I said earlier, I don’t know why some events don’t pull a crowd, but I have my suspicions. Keep an eye out for the next one folks, you might get a pleasant surprise!
