Known for putting on some great undergorund parties, but more on the psytrance vibe, I was very excited to see what would happen when the EDGECORE crew joined forces with Rif Productions for the second installment of Deep As Funk. And this was no psy party, as the name suggests this party was about tough and funky music of all styles. Read on.

I arrived early to Candy’s Apartment and up first was Rif Raf, who thrilled the already packed floor with a full throttle set of heavy electro-tech and breaks threaded with a subtle tuff disco element, setting the tone for what was to be a top quality night.

DJs Nick Taylor and Jackie Onassid, who made the trip from Byron showed Sydney party goers what dirty underground is all about. Undoubtedly the jewel in the crown of this filthy night, Nick Taylor wowed with a unique ‘nothing sacred’ mix of punk-house, rock n roll, and electro clash, while Jackie Onassid had the crowd in dirty overdrive with funky nu school breaks and upbeat eclectic edged grooves.

Ministry Of Sound DJ Mark Dynamix let loose with a fantastically heavy tech-house and electro punk influenced set that suggested he felt completely in his element. Hard as hell, he pummeled the willing crowd into an unwholesome display of motion.

Beneath the crystal chandelier, in the cavernous interior of the piano room of Candy’s Apartment the crowd was treated to a fine line up, with funky breaks from Stephan aka pH followed by one of the best funky acid house inspired sets I’ve seen in a long time by D’Jonee. In her special debut performance, a DJ to keep an eye out for!

DJ Katonic played a clean and masterful set of progressive house and breaks, and, despite the fact that the headliner was playing the main floor in the same slot, kept the room packed and pumping.

The visuals on the night were subtle, to-the-side, and completely classy. All in all Candy’s Apartment provided the perfect venue, with friendly staff and a welcoming, very European feel with its grotto-ish mirror balled interior.

Deep As Funk no doubt set a standard, attracting a truly eclectic mix of clubbers, doofers, and freaks. Just when you thought the quality underground event was in its death throes, a wonderful effort from Rif Productions and Edgecore Releases that has yet again, raised the stakes in the Sydney underground music scene.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
