Base101 promoter DJ Armee had setup the night in a somewhat different format utilizing male and female partnerships from scattered corners of the drumnbass world. It gave a feminine feel to our, all too male dominated, sound and provided a good showcase of NZ & Victorian perspectives to the Perth Crew in a night not overly dominated by an international heavyweight. The format encouraged equal respect across the night with no noticeable influx or exodus caused by the Mosus & Tali set

Armee and Mystique kicked things off for the early few. After a support slot for Jurrasic5 at a ‘rammed to the roof’ Metro’s on Thursday, Armee had his Downsyde mates down for the night to help celebrate. Tonight was strictly drumnbass though, and Mystique helped fill Heat with some warm rolling bass sounds. The club was looking nice decked out with some new trafik signs straight out of the intro to Scratch.

Frantik took control next, dropping into some bouncy beats in the form of Kamanchi and moving through Dillinja’s Different Drum remix and, upcoming visitor, Hive’s remix of BC’s Mass Hysteria. Enticing the first few on to the dancefloor Frantik had things bubbling for the handover even finding time for DJ Spice’ Porn track and its instant reaction.

This made way for the first eastern states visitor DJ Ruxspin, who brought some nice and heavy bass along with some new studio cuts for the Perth crew. Ruxspin & Fiend kicked off things on the back to back combos with some local support on the mic from MCs J Rippa & Lurch. With the MCs rhyming nicely on the mic the Victorian combo moved through some big new tunes including the Generation Dub remix of Champion Sound and Ram Trilogy’s Screamer mixed into Vault, a familiar blend for those two songs. Then the Virus remix of We want your Soul got its first outing for the night as a smiling Ruxspin gave into mic pressure for the rewind. Armee appeared next to Ruxspin and proceed to plug in a 3rd deck, chuck on a scratch record and let rip with some scratching, building up with the tune playing on deck one. Nice impro. These two should visit more often as they have the skills to move Perth and it will be interesting to see the production action coming from Ruxspin and his mates.

Mosus, complete with new hat, stepped up behind the decks and proceeded to play around with the controls aquainting himself with the Heat setup. This short delay gave MC Tali the opportunity for a sweet sounding acapella just to warm herself up for the night. The club was moving as Mosus applied the heavy bass pressure in the form of many a new tune off CD, at some stages forgetting the decks on top were there for vinyl too. He has heaps of new material, some forthcoming on his own Scientific label plus he is in demand worldwide after his first success on NZ label Subtronix with I like it Ruff in collaboration with Concord Dawn’s Kiljoy. Mosus dropped the VIP of I like it Ruff as the dancefloor lurched around to the bass sounds. He then moved through some more familiar vinyl territory getting into the Bristol sounds with new Clipz material and also the Marky & XRS remix of Tali’s Lyric on my Lip, which dropped into a backing track for more of a live version straight from the lady herself. This blended well into Tali’s massive forthcoming track High Hopes, which again sounded oh so good with Tali adding something extra, live on the mic. Mosus never strayed too far from the heavier path dropping Signal, one of Fresh’s new tunes being cained by many DJs at the moment. Ripping into Roni Size’ remix of Hotness, Mosus finished on a full cycle segment dropping two new cuts off Tali’s LP forthcoming in January 04. Both sounding like they’ll blow up in the same way High Hopes is, and Lyric on My Lip has. Big things are coming from Tali + Full Cycle and Mosus, what a way to finish the set. Tali then pulled out her bag of goodies handing out white labels, CDs and tapes to her admiring fans.

MK1 and Mystique were up next as the dancefloor remained moving with MK1 dropping Pendulum’s Back to You, to the delight of the crowd, bringing about the rewind. MK1 was on the quick mix effectively ripping the fader into Without You and back again. Mystique dropped the new Capoeira remix and moved into High Conrast’s PNGremix. The Perth duo had the dancefloor rockin’ as Armee got up to perform some more scratchin on the third deck giving another edge to Signal second time round. MK1 rinsed out Jo’s R-Type relick and even Dillinja’s Twist em Out. Things were dropping off as people started to leave but MK1 kept it heavy until the end with Foreigner from Fresh and Dillinja’s heavy Thugged Out Bitch.

Skoa stepped up last for a shortened set to finish up for the few that were left standing on the dancefloor. It was a night of fresh cuts and heavy beats with an appreciative local crew loving the performance before us on the night. Watch out for big things from Tali and Mosus in the coming summer months. Respect to Base101 and Trafik for another memorable night.
