We arrived at Toast armed with sleep deprivation and ready for a night of funked up breaks and trashy shenanigans in the paradise that is the Toast courtyard. Shortly after we got to Toast, Killer Vinyl Nation busted onto the stage looking full of energy and ready to rhyme. ITM’s Antwan proved to be as dope as ever, taking a leading role in the three MCs of KVN, while Ill K ripped up a storm behind the decks. Unfortunately due to Toast’s lack of technical education there were technical difficulties with the mics, the boys from KVN did their best to get fixed, but with whoever was in charge of the sound being unhelpful things did not improve. We got to hear a couple more tracks with some tight vocal flows, but due to the technical situation failing to improve, KVN left the stage.
Tarlo was up next and started setting the mood for a night of tough, cranking breaks. It had been a while since I’d had a chance to go out for a good night of breaks and Tarlo was definitely coming through with the goods. Setting the scene for Kraymon by committing what (according to a recent poll) 48% of ITMers would consider blasphemy and dropping Kraymon’s track, ‘Who wants some’, which I thought was quite appropriate. The set continued to heighten the atmosphere and eventually drew to a close with ‘Burning’ by Hybrid.
Next up was the man everyone had come to see (except one sketchy yokel who thought I had said Kramer was playing) and he did not disappoint. He set the mood with tracks like ‘He not in’ by Chicken Lips and the Plumps’ ‘The gate’ which always goes down a treat. The crowd was of an average size, there could have been more people but there was enough attendance to provide a good atmosphere, and there were people getting up for bit of a boogie. As I was fading away and wishing for sleep I was forced to once again get up and dance the night away as he continued to deliver top notch broken beats, including one of my favourites, Chemical Brothers ‘Base 6’. Kraymon wound up with a very tasty track which I’ve been told is a remix for C83. All in all, Kraymon didn’t disappoint.
ITM’s resident pimping extraordinaire, Typhonic was up for the final set and did not disappoint. Unfortunately I wasn’t around to the very end as sleep was definitely calling by this stage, but Typho as usual kept the party vibe alive as he provided us with hella party some crazy style scratching.
All in all, big ups to Rahm for providing us with such a wickedly bodacious night, the beat was as broken as I was by the end of my weekend but I thoroughly enjoyed myself. I think Toast needs to sort out its sound as it left a few performers and a few punters quite unimpressed with it all. Toast had a wicked vibe happening, full of crazy people having a whole heap of fun, but if I may bust a quote from a Kraymon track, “If that’s what being crazy is then I’m senseless, out of it, gone down the road wacko.”
