It was with great anticipation that I headed towards the Mandarin club. The last edition of Metropolis had been a first rate night and I hoped for another.
One of the most notable features of these nights is the amount of time and effort spent on creating a crazy yet brilliant space out of your average run of the mill, club function room. Outstanding lighting, crazy hangings and props as well as the most awesome psychedelic, cushioned chill out room I have seen inside or outside a club. On top of this, there were even some top notch tunes!
The nights opening set came from Jimmy Savage & Gargs who’s breaky electro tunes played out to an almost empty room. By 11pm the room was filling slowly and a couple of people had even ventured on to the dance floor.
Next up was Chromatic who amped the tunage up a notch into a more tech sound. This sound tempted even more people on to the floor and by this stage a nice little crowd had taken residence for the night.
Next up to rock the dancefloor was the parties creator Dartech going back to back with AKA. Dartech started off with some hard electro sounds which had the floor jumping. Aka then followed on this harder tip before Dartech returned and continued to build with some more tech like sounds. AKA choose this point to pull back the pace a bit with some a few more electro sounds before building as the set came to an end.
It was now up to Marshall, Tom Haze and Rip to bring us home. Marshall cranked up the pace again and played a couple of his own tracks I believe. He was ably supported by Tom Haze who scratched up a storm at times and played some classic tunes including some Richie Hawtin. Rip took us till close with his usual slammin style that had my ears ringing for days after.
Everyone seemed happy with the night although the promoters had hoped for a slightly larger crowd. But all in all another top edition in the Metropolis series. Also happy birthday to the many who were celebrating
