The second installment of High Jinks at the Sly Fox in Enmore can only be classed as an outstanding success. After enjoying the first one immensely I bundled together an assorted crew of mates and wondered up the road to the Sly Fox prepared to hear some good music in a happy friendly environment. And this is exactly what we got!

We arrived about 8.30 mid way through Señor Spitch’s set and it was all bubbling along very nicely. The bar was well patronised (the last half hour of two for one cocktails) and there was a general cheerful buzz running through the place. I’d like to congratulate the hardworking bar staff at the Sly Fox at this point as the demand for two for one cocktails was far higher than their ability to deliver but they kept everyone happy by politely giving out tickets and keeping their cool. Some people waited nearly an hour for their cocktails but there was nary a word of complaint when they were received …more like appreciative gurgles at the quality of their pretty drinks.

The next hour or so passed in a blurr of hugs and kisses and catching up with the large InTheMix massive present. So many lovely people all in one place! This certainly made the atmosphere great fun and silliness was definitely the theme for the night along with random nipple tweaking :o) Good to see the regulars at the Sly Fox joining in and contributing to the buzz as well. The décor was fun and the first time I have encountered decorations that were actually designed to be stolen! If you were too polite to steal your own Galaxian then give Spitch or Simon a call!

Suddenly it was that time and Miss Memory stepped up to the DJ box … what’s this? She was DJing from a laptop! This alone made me curious and I stood at attention for the first few tracks to see how she would do. She started off with a few well-known electro tracks (a departure from the breaks being played by Quest Pond at the end of his set) and led us very gently into her zone. All of a sudden she gave us a fantastic electro set which had the dance floor up and moving and many appreciative murmours from the bar as well. It was lovely to see her relax into it and the crowd around her being very appreciative – that’s what it’s all about isn’t it? Enjoying the music together!

Miss Memory definitely set the pace for the rest of the evening, the music was lots of fun, there were a lot of high jinks going on around the bar area and from the look on the faces of most of the punters, an enjoyable night was being had by all.

Major props to Señor Spitch and Simon for putting on a good fun night and delivering nice sets that kept people up and dancing. Good to hear old favourites like Night of The Jaguar and Man With The Red Face thrown in for good measure, whoop!

A special call out too to Joany from the UK, the funky diva who shimmied and shook her booty all night long before having to board a plane back to ole blighty first thing in the morning … well done Joany … ENJOY!

A couple of further observations: If you are thinking of heading to the next one do not wear thongs and take care with open toed shoes, the doormen are very strict on that one and one of our crew didn’t make it in. Also, if you are planning on getting very messily drunk, be aware the bar staff are not afraid to stop serving you or throw you out … some stories to be told there :o)

If a negative point has to be found, well the sound could have done with a little more tuning … yes we understand that this is not a club night but it would be nice to hear the music clearly from the bar and out around the pool table as well.

And on that note I would like to add that it’s great to meet up with fellow music mates in a pub environment where you can actually have a chat and catch up on the gossip without shouting over club sound systems or being knocked off the dance floor by gurning clubbers.

My opinion? Sydney sorely needs more nights like these in pubs where music can be heard and appreciated without having to stay out all night waiting to hear “your favourite DJ”. The now defunct and much missed Four Play nights set a very good standard in this arena. But fear not! If you want some quality music and a friendly environment, look no further than High Jinks, it will deliver the goods and more.

See you at the next one!
