Perth clearly has a great pool of local talent, which was well demonstrated at All Funked Up with some new faces and some familiar ones banging out the funky beats till the early hours of the morning at the G Spot, Joondalup. The isolation of the club made little difference to the many committed punters who made the trek to support the scene and support the many talented DJs on the lineup. From start to finish everyone was kept happy, the variety of a house and breaks room combined with a RnB room allowing people to find something to suit their tastes.

I arrived at the G Spot a little after 10pm and was greeted by the soulful sounds of Mandy Bubbs working the decks and providing an impressive warm up for the night that was to come. Relaxed but funky tunes like Jay J and Chris Lum – Up All Night got everyone in a good mood and I noticed many toes tapping and heads bopping by the time she finished her set.

Next up behind the decks were Clint Wiltshire and JDubz, two relatively new faces in the Perth house scene that we will want to watch out for in the future. They continued to keep the music deep and funky, adding in more vocals to the mix and giving it a jazzy, sometimes latin feel before moving towards a heavier tech house style of music.

Philly was next to step up to the DJ booth, his style of party breaks provided a nice contrast to the main room which had until now been all four-on-the-floor beats. Law and Warren 10 then took over, their selection of funky yet driving tech house giving many tired punters that little bit of extra energy to keep dancing a while longer. At 3am young DJ Slade and event organiser Masri took over to do the closing set. Their fresh, funky selection of tunes such as Aquanote – Nowhere and Satoshi Tomiie presents Ice – Scandal In New York rounding off the night nicely.

Sergio, Haji and Nanoc kept the adjacent RnB room pumping, the three of them alternating behind the decks over the course of the night. The layout of the venue worked really well, allowing people to listen to their room of choice without worrying about noise interference.

Once again Perth showed it has great fondness for funky sounds, the amount of support shown regardless of the venue’s isolation is testament to this and we will definitely have to keep an eye on these funked up DJs in the years ahead.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
