The drum and bass massive were once again forced to come up with excuses as to why they were late/deaf/useless at work on Friday as legendary British DJ Goldie performed on the awesome Home sound system. The second instalment of The Fracture Factory offered free entry for the first 300 RSVPs and their friends. Such tactics I hoped would ensure a decent sized crowd, always a risk on a school night, and I wasn’t disappointed, arriving to an already pumping dance floor and some fat tunes from Ritual.

The Fracture Factory bravely had four rooms running on the night, with the trendy mulletted, statement t-shirted, ripped jeaned mob busting a move on the dance floor to the sounds of Elroy and Mark Walton in the Breaks room. With some Hip Hop and some new talent showcasing in the other rooms there was a bit of something for everybody.

Downstairs the main room was decorated with graffiti art on the walls and the televisions, with subliminal Coca-Cola advertising flashing across the screens making me thirsty for more. Or that could have been the crowd burning up the dance floor as Goldie made his way to the decks. It was only going to get hotter as Goldie rolled out the tunes with MC Losty revving us up with his fine freestyling.

Rewinding five minutes in, the crowd cheered with anticipation. No less than ten rewinds later we were scratching our heads wondering if this was part of the show or whether the man was such a perfectionist he just couldn’t help himself. Obsessive compulsive or not Goldie had the punters dancing for a full two hours to his jungly drum and bass. All this AND free entry, we couldn’t believe our luck.

The crowd thinned considerably after Goldie’s set as the reality of a Thursday night show kicked in. As for me, I had no excuse as it was off to the Big Day Out on Friday for some more permanent hearing damage. The Fracture Factory is definitely an event to look out for on Home’s already extensive repertoire. My only advice, consider earplugs when listening to drum and bass at Home!!
