The Australiana of 2-Up being gambled in the street and a footpath stencil saying, “Keep The Muff Hairy Save Tassie Forests”, had not stopped Jaymz Nylon feeling right at home on the roof of the East Village.
The host and promoter of Smooch, Scott Pullen, personally invited Jaymz Nylon to the East Village on what seemed like his only appearance in Sydney. Peter Fam and then Renae Stanton had been on earlier while the sun sank behind the skyline. The good high quality music continued with the ever professional Scott Pullen creating an atmospheric cocktail of beats, breaks and deep house. The guests enjoyed themselves too, assisted with the surprisingly cheap door price of $5.
The ambience was warm, human and happy. Families of guests grouped around the Sydney city view chatting and smiling, the occasional busted move giving a welcome edge. Their origins were broad; multisexual, teen to middle-aged, clubbers and toughs, all taking in the evening air. The guests and hosts took advantage of that unique lazy Sunday evening ambience, even though it was a public holiday the morning after. Everybody just melted, relaxed and enjoyed Smooch.
The volume was distributed around the roof at strategic locations which permeated at listening, rather than dancing, levels. The music shone through without overwhelming the various and nefarious conversations taking place; a rare and precious feature of the Sydney dance music scene. There was no need for special lighting, the neons from the William Street boulevard provided that.
Jaymz Nylon mingled with the guests unnoticed until a few minutes later when a soulful mix of 1970s New York Electro-Jazz and soothing vocals tinkled at the guests’ ears. When the mix was developed with a little slow House the guests started to swing their hips and move their arms where they were standing on the dancefloor and anywhere. His Smooch style this night was ultra-smooth.
An international selector, Jaymz Nylon has played almost everywhere in New York City, Lick in Paris, Manumission in Ibiza, Space Lab Yellow in Tokyo, closer at Home and Milk’n’2 Sugars in Sydney, and Sainbar in Melbourne. His talents include sound design and scultpture for Gucci, the fashion house, and the New York Academy of Art. He has also released tracks through Loveslap, Irma, Nite Grooves, Strictly Rhythm and Eighball. Let’s hope he stays a couple of weeks and adds some more cream to Sydney’s nightlife.
