I like house. In fact I love house. It doesn’t matter whether it’s prog-house, tech-house, electro house, funky house or just plain old four on the floor booty shaking house. Don’t get me wrong – I go through stages of liking other genres of music – breaks, techno, drum and bass… even trance from time to time, but when it comes down to it house will always be my first love. Having been doing the breaks thing for the last couple of weeks with my last house fix being Junior Jack (360), I’d started to get just a little bit edgy. So, with the promise of house, house and then a bit more house thrown in for luck, you can understand why I was so eagerly anticipating (read: watering at the mouth) Lookin’ Good at Candy’s Apartment.

Braving Sydney’s sudden cold snap, my co-partner in crime and I arrived at Candy’s Apartment just before midnight to catch the end of Jack n Jazz. With such a huge number of Sydney’s clubbing population being at another certain big name event, Candy’s felt a little empty however a steady procession of smiling punters descending the stairs quickly filled the place. By the time that Bob Frisky and Jackster took their places at the decks, the crowd were well and truly up and dancing. And what a crowd it was – easily the most diverse I have seen in a long, long time as opposed to the usual trucker cap brigade I had become accustomed to accepting as standard issue. This included what were obviously first-timers, a hen’s night, a few suits, the odd tweaker, many a gurner and the closest thing Candy’s has seen to podium dancers. The one thing they had in common? Everyone was well and truly up for it.

Frisky and Jackster played a mad set that was perfectly timed to get the crowd into the mood. As opposed to some back to back sets where one DJ is dropping tracks while the other attempts to pull women, this duo played a true back to back set constantly trying to get one up on the other, however at no time losing the overall continuity. Their enthusiasm combined with excellent track selection and tight mixes had exactly the desired effect – by the time Mark Dynamix and Adam Coverdale stepped up, everyone was on their feet.

To be honest it’s been a fair while since I saw Dynamix play so I was curious to see if he could still deliver the goods… and with the assistance of Adam Coverdale, deliver he did. The combination of these two DJs was the perfect mix as they took us on a journey through the last ten plus years of house. We’re talking the lot – vocals, classic piano riffs… the anthems were coming thick and fast. The range of tracks were mind blowing – Groove Armada, Planet Funk, Young MC, Underworld. The crowd lapped it up and then screamed for more. It seemed as if every track they dropped bought hazy memories of almost forgotten clubs and parties flooding back. The wailing 303s in Josh Wink’s “Higher State of Consciousness” had the crowd with their hands in the air before getting things back onto the funky tip with an expertly timed James Brown mix and then not long after “Cop That Shit” by Missy Elliott. Both Dynamix and Adam Coverdale stamped their signature on the set with a unique blend of scratching and impeccably timed mixing. Combine this with the live saxophonist that seemingly appeared from nowhere towards the end of the set and we were left with a very special set that I think most people won’t forget for a long time.

It was at about this point that we decided to head for home so we said our goodbyes and as we climbed the stairs the sounds of uplifting house courtesy of Tom da Silva emanated into the frosty pre-dawn air. By all reports the crowd was still going strong come closing time – not a particularly hard thing to imagine with the quality of DJs that the Lookin’ Good crew had served up for us. I have to apologise for not making it to check out any of the girls playing The Powder Room – it was simply too hard to drag myself away from the main room, but apparently they rocked just as hard as the boys out the front.

The final verdict? Well, if the Lookin’ Good crew continue at this rate, they’re sure to build upon what’s already a loyal fan base. A truly excellent night that has left this house lover counting down the days until the next event.
