The Moon bar has often been known for showcasing some of Australia’s best talents and this weekend was no different. Like fellow Australians Infusion and Pendulum, Nubreed have been taking on the international dance music scene by storm and Brisbane punters were lucky enough to have yet another chance to get a taste of what these Melbourne lads have to offer.

For many of the punters this may have been their first experience of seeing Nubreed live, while for others more familiar with their live performance, it was a chance to see them perform with new added member Dave Norris. Whatever their reasons for being present, the punters were in full force and soon after midnight the Moon bar was completely full.

Nubreed are currently touring to promote the release of their new album The Original, an achievement in itself and something that wouldn’t have been possible if it weren’t for their strong live performances. This is not the first time they have visited Brisbane, and like their good friend Phil K, are frequent visitors to the Moon bar.

As Nubreed stepped up on stage, you could feel the anticipation of the crowd building immensely. The lights went dark and the crowd went wild as lead singer Mykel (Michael Warlburgh) spoke the words ‘nubreed’. Soon their trademark progressive breaks had the entire crowd moving. The energy that this group brings to their crowd, was evident quite early in their set, especially when the first few bars of their second song began to take over the crowd. That track was of course ‘one day’. Mykel’s voice is just so powerful in this track and he does not let anyone down with his live version.

Currently getting airplay on stations such as Triple J and Nova, it has almost hit anthem status, evident even more so as the crowd sung along to its chorus.

What was also evident though, was the presence of darkness and no lighting. At first it was thought that the lighting had been dimmed to add mood to the beginning of their set, but it wasn’t long before Mykel requested ‘can we have some lighting please’ several times over his mic, making the crowd aware their may have been a mishap. It wasn’t until the middle of their 5th track that the audience were treated to some lighting on this amazing electronic outfit. Most bands would have crumbled under the circumstances, when faced with performing in complete darkness, but Nubreed managed to keep the crowd hooked on every beat. Their full magic was unleashed once the lights began to trail over them for the remainder of their set. Though you could argue that the spark made by this band was brighter then any lighting could achieve.

The highlight of the night, was definitely hearing them perform the track Welcome. It was this track and Triple J that helped the original trio rise to fame and when performed live, just sends shivers down your spine. Hearing it live, almost makes you forget that you are listening sounds grown out of our own backyard. It is no wonder that this group have got so much acclaim overseas.

Nubreed certainly did not leave their Brisbane fans disappointed. Their performance may have lacked in some of the hip hop laced tracks they are known for in their southern performances, but their progressive sound seemed to warm to the Moon bar crowd more appropriately. Definitely a top shelf performance proving why Nubreed are one of Australia’s best live electronic outfits.
