For some of us, it was a difficult decision to make. For most, they chose not to decide and opted to go for both events. The last time Heineken held an event; Zouk KL was filled to the brim with clubbers keen to witness DJ Tiesto, recently crowned the World’s Best DJ. With that last event, needless to say, which was truly spectacular, Heineken Green Room Sessions (HGRS) had a lot to live up to.
Perhaps due to the massive horde at the Tiesto event that could have turned party goers off, or perhaps it was a lesson learnt from the last event that prompted dance aficionados to arrive early, less human traffic was seen outside at 10 p.m. One ponders if this an indicator that dance music has seen its run around the mill?
Then it was time to make decisions. The night had offered us two delectable music acts- Seb Fontaine, renowned for his long list of super tracks and mixing abilities as well as Kruder, the classy lounge music genius. There was a catch however, the two acts were held at the same time, at different venues. Kruder was exhibiting his talent at Velvet Underground and Seb Fontaine was showing off his mixology skills at the Zouk, main room. And if you made it out of tonight’s adventures in one piece, can you make it for David Morales tomorrow? Difficult and life altering decisions indeed.
Nevertheless, Velvet Underground was filled with discerning music listeners and many from the creative industry. Funky fashion apparel was exhibited by party goers, some of which inspired by the latest trends, most however, were self inspirational. The media had a ball, to say the least, as many clubbers were inclined to have their pictures taken and fawned over flashing cameras, courting unconventional outfits that were assembled from parts of other outfits. Standing apart from the crowd however, was a trio of Austrian patriots supporting Kruder, sporting dreadlocks and dancing all night to the tunes from Kruder.
The crowd tuned into Kruder’s show, which kicked off with some of his mellower chill-out hits and transformed into harder, compressed beats, and true to Kruder’s form, reached an apex of indescribable audio notes and off beat rhythms. Most clubbers enjoyed the beats over several Heinekens, combining their conversation with the audio bliss. For someone who has seen the duo perform, it has to be noted that Kruder looked lonely without his other half, Dorfmeister. Together, the duo had produced numerous hits that coerced stiff limbs and broken arms to jiggle.
Chatting to some of the beautiful ladies, I posed the question, ‘Why Kruder over Seb Fontaine?’ to which many simply replied, ‘Coz, he’s better, a real musician and a terrific entertainer’ and followed by ‘It doesn’t matter anyways, coz I’ll also be watching Seb Fontaine later on,’ aptly summarizes the environment at Velvet Underground. Thrilled by the show while anticipating total excitement that awaits them next door and not wanting miss out on any fun, clubbers were in high spirits.. in more ways than one.
HGRS was an overall success, delivering an outstanding and creative musician who entertained and enticed the crowd. A little bird on a tree whispered and informed me about an event in July, also by HGRS featuring several upcoming artists from the world of Planet Dance Mania. Let’s see how HGRS at the next session is going to upstage their success as a purveyor of the chic and trendy cosmopolitan lifestyle; and leave us the lingering feeling, croaking for more of the emerald bottle.
So, Seb Fontaine is next. David Morales tomorrow?
