Saturday night at Progress boasted an all-star cast as the trance masters of Europe descended on Sydney for a night that promised to be a ‘Trance Extravaganza’, and it would certainly seem so with the likes of Flutlicht, S.H.O.K.K and Marcel Woods all on the same bill!

A DJ line-up this huge ensured that the entry line up was just as big!! I arrived just in time to catch Chia and Archie playing back to back as they set to warming up the slowly filling club.

In eager anticipation I awaited the arrival of Flutlicht to the decks. (His set time was pushed back slightly due to those still waiting in line) Flutlicht are pioneers of the hard trance sound and are renowned for revolutionising the Trance scene worldwide by constantly challenging the boundaries of Trance and incorporating unique blends of synths and melodies in all they do.

As it was still early, Flutlicht started with some lighter, uplifting tracks before moving into his trademark hard trance sound. As promised, he delivered many a classic Flutlicht production in a set that was hard and driving throughout. The hard thumpin beats pounding the air were interspersed with heavenly vocals and euphoric interludes which, with the sound system and acoustics at Gas, ensured the sound quality was amazing! This was trance at its best and the crowd showed their appreciation with their hands in the air.

Up next was S.H.O.K.K., another Swiss DJ/ Producer I was very keen to check out. He played with his production partner Flutlicht for a bit before taking over the decks for a hard trance onslaught! S.H.O.K.K’s build-ups and breakdowns are legendary amongst the trance community and tonight was no exception. I have never heard the clubbers at Progress be so vocal before!?! It seemed every track this man dropped resulted in a roar of “YEAH” from the dance floor below.

He incorporated elements of techno into his set and shokked me no end when he dropped a bass heavy, Latin-house track into the mix bringing a whole new groove to the confines of Gas! He was quickly back on the harder stuff though and dropping many of his own productions into the mix. Isn’t It All A Little Strange? was well received but it was his new production with Marcel Woods, Tulips & Chocolate that I was listening out for and it was well worth the wait! This tune is going to be epic if the reaction on Saturday night is anything to go by. Excellent!

Marcel Woods continued along the hard trance line of the night but added a touch of ‘tech’ to the mix. His tough new electro-trance release Static State went down a treat when he dropped it into his set and the Tiesto remix of Adagio for Strings also proved extremely popular with those still on the dance floor. Marcel Woods is definitely an entertainer and he seemed to be enjoying himself immensely on Saturday night as he danced behind the decks and partied with his crowd.

A BIG thanks must go to the all the internationals on the night for doing what internationals are supposed to do – bring great new European productions with them to the land Down Under.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
