DB04: Loaded Dice delivered again, managing to wrench the Irish production genius that is Calibre away from the Signature Studio and right out of the Northern Hemisphere summer.
He graced our shores with a crate full of soulful sounds and dubwise plates ready to entertain the headz and re-educate those who thought dnb was all about darkness. It was well worth the wait for Calibre’s first visit down here, although not as widely known as his darker counterparts, his production sound is at the forefront of the musical/liquid side of dnb and his quality & quantity of releases are second to none. Calibre illustrates perfectly the diversity within drumnbass and is one of the reasons why our sound has so much respect outside the tightly knit scene. So DB04 was all about quality tunes and not tear out basslines that knock you in the nose bridge.
Daemos fired up the early crew with a mixed up selection from heavy bass to lighter moments, where warm basslines invited the early few inside and out of the chilly Perth night.
MK1 was up next as the Monkey Bar began to fill with faces old & new, he entered with some liquid selections easing it into heavier sounds enticing the first few off the sidelines and on to the dancefloor. The DJ set up was at the side giving the main room a more spacious feel. Nu Tone’s Strictly Social & Calibre’s remix of Film – Zinc’s new ragga flavoured tune filled out the club. MK1 found time for more local flavours moving down darker with Pendulum’s Submarines rmx and Greg Packer’s darker revisit of Wonderful Day.
Around midnight Concept kicked things off with MIST’s How you make me feel, keeping those few on the dancefloor moving with the bass heavy sounds of Echo Box. Artificial Intelligence’ smooth Trick me Remix rinsed out with the liquid Kelis vocals flowing over laid back drum breaks. Concept mixed it up well moving into Pendulum’s heavy remix of Concord Dawn’s Tonight.
Rintel had the 1200’s pushing +8 for the start of his set as he looked all fired up to get things moving on the dancefloor as J Rippa warmed up the mic. With smooth rhymes and smooth blends the Monkey Bar got moving to the sounds of Logistics straight from the fresh Future Sound of Cambridge EP. Rintel held the dancefloor with some good mixing backed up by the rhyming flows from J Rippa
Assassin took over on the mic for the intro, warming things up for Calibre who wasted no time getting into some fresh Signature material. Calibre mixed up the new tunes with plenty of his own material getting played out including Mr Maverick, Highlander, Makes Me Wonder and the classic collaboration with the Singing Fats – Drop it Down. Infact Calibre could have played a whole 2 hr set of his own tunes but he found time for some Zinc, Roni Size and a new Greg Packer & Assasin tune which sounded very nice indeed. With the noise of appreciation on the dancefloor and the support from the international visitor you can expect more from this quality local collaboration. The combination of Assassin rhyming over the smooth drumnbass sounds of Calibre made the perfect atmosphere inside the MonkeyBar as most could not escape the dancefloor. The liquid rhythms flowed until Assassin announced the last one had come around all too soon and the Jahiem vocals on Calibre’s soulful remix of Put your woman First echoed in. Perth showed that we love the sound of Calibre with plenty of appreciation for a memorable set from a DJ who took us on a journey through sound, a long way past the bassline.
Diamond D took control with Assassin to finish off a fine night. He contrasted the Calibre sounds dropping straight into the popular new Dillinja track In the Grind. Most stayed on the dancefloor for the remaining heavier sounds while Diamond D rolled out Phantasy, Shodan & UK Apache’ new true playaz tune Gimme da Gal. Heavy till the end, Diamond D held his end at another night of quality drumnbass.
Respect to Calibre for an inspring set
