They are renownd for putting on a wicked live show. Jurassic 5 or J5 are Chali 2na, Zaakir, Akil and Mark 7. ”...guarenteed to smoke you better then twice,”(high fidelity) and justice was shown on Tuesday night at Metro City when the guys rocked the house for the secind time… on the same tour! Yep the exact same show, but that doesn’t mean it was any less.
The night was jam packed and luckily wrapped up rather early due to the fact most people would probably be working the next day. At 9pm, when Scribe kicked us off, the club was filled to the rafters with eager hip hop enthusiasts. We were out of there under a few hours later. Short doesn’t mean bad though. It was great not having to stand around for hours in anticipation.
Scribe put on a good performance, although only for 35 minutes. P-Money, producer of his album, wasn’t with him this time. Instead was DJ D Form mixing his tracks. He opened with single Not Many and followed with Money Money. Scribe seemed more relaxed this second time round and interacted with his audience well. After doing a few more tracks, one being dedicated to his woman back at home, he closed with The Cruisader.
For the next half hour local DJ favourite DJ Armee was up next. He played a funky upbeat set, dancing around to Tricka Technology.
Thinking we would be there ‘til early hours of the morning, I was releived when J5 stepped onstage at 10:15. Show organisers would have taken into consideration that it was a weeknight and all. I myself had uni the following day, but no time to think about that now! The only class I was going to focus on would be the one I was at now, educating me with funk. The tutor: J5. The lesson: Hip hop 101 – J5 style.
I don’t have much to say about the set itself that you wouldn’t have already heard from the last time they were here. This is because it was the exact same set. Yep, it was still the same tour the guys embarked upon last year, they just decided they may as well go around again a second time. Boy are we thankful of that though, coz it was just as jumpin’ as before. Staring out with I Am Somebody the show kicked off. One of my favourite DJs, DJ Cut Chemist and DJ Nu Mark helped make the show memorable. A couple of songs in Nu Mark jumped on the drum kit that was set up and beated it out while Cut Chemist performed his work, cutting up the decks to some swinging tracks including Swing Set (a personal favourite). To my glee they brought out the “toy looking” contraptions again. An old-old school, plastic looking , strap on turtable was Cut Chemists and Nu Mark had two boxes set up in front of him. These contained 5 courloured cubes each which he interchanged and rotated to generate various funky beats. The rest of the set was a whirlwind blend of various memorable songs from their three albums. They surprised us at the end by dropping the Hilltop Hoods Nosebleed Section beat, which the crowd responded to with cheery enthusiasm.
A sold out show like before. A fantastic show like before. The guys stuck around signing autrographs for eager fans like before and everyone left ampt and happy, like before. How can one complain?
