Jack City @ Candy's Apartment, Sydney (31/07/07)

It’s a Saturday night. I, and little group of trouble-starters, got our act together by around 10, when someone remembered that we were actually going out. What’s more, we were going to Candy’s Apartment. What’s even more, we were going to JACK CITY: population unknown. As we walked out the door I was fairly pumped for a night of housey house, and broken breaks. We arrived in the X at 11ish and walked down the stairs and into Candy’s. To begin with we had the obligatory cold alcoholic beverage from the very friendly bar staff, sat down and had a bit of chin wag. At this time, I was a little disappointed with the turnout. I wouldn’t hazard a guess at how many, but it was very few (though the nooks and crannies in this place can be rather deceptive). But all was not lost as Ben Morris pumped out the house in the front room. His style was rather techy, but this is not to say it wasn’t funky at the same time – because it was. If there had been more than the empty dance floor, I myself would have been having a shindig. We hung around on the outskirts of the dancefloor until Illya finished a wicked set. At this time we were definitely up for some dancing action, and it really wasn’t happening at the front, so we headed to the backroom. The Back room was clearly where it was at on a Saturday night at 12.30. This room was ebbing and flowing like a river until “WHAM”, along comes a fat (with a ph) breakdown by none other than Elroy, one of Sydney’s finest breaks DJs, and suddenly we were on a waterfall in freefall. I have to say that I really do enjoy a large serving of breaks every so often, and this set by Elroy certainly provided this. At many points we had our hands in the air and our feet stomping the concrete. At 2, Elroy was replaced by Shamozzle and MC Eavesdrop, who delivered a fantastic set which incorporated Eavesdrop’s wicked MC style. The bass lines were awesome, and amazing breakdowns had us screaming for more. This part of the night brought a very underground feel to Candy’s, like we were back in the earlier years of clubbing – or maybe someone was playing tricks on me? At about 3.30 it seemed time for some more of the house stuff, so we headed out to the front room to jump around to the thumping basslines and teched-up tunes being spun by none other that Sam Serene. By this time the dancefloor was a little more crowded (but still rather empty), and everyone present was having a fantastic time in this little bit of the world made up only of the music we love and the people around us. I managed to stay until my legs almost gave out, but having to get to work by 7 the next morning was looking more and more horrible… Finally we staggered out into the cold sleazy air of the Cross at 4am (ish) on a Sunday morning to try and score a cab. All in all we had a great night of dancing and chatting to the deep down and dirty, techy house being played and the beautiful breaks being spun. Unfortunately we missed most of Mark Walton who played 3.30 to 5, and all of Vinyl Tap, both in the breaks room. And also missed Sam Serene Vs Julian Jason and then Julian Jason Vs Synik. It’s such a pity! The only problem was the smaller than expected turnout. But the crowd who did make it were awesome. Friendly, vibrant and diverse. And some of them even put up with my constant jibberish babbling which lasted for a number of hours! We had a great night with some even better music.
