Whoop Whoop – Dynamo. In three words that pretty much sums up this Friday night hip hop gig at the Flying Scotsmen.

The hype surrounding this gig was huge due the budget priced tickets and the following that the dynamo productions had gathered after their summer set at sunshine people earlier this year.

Considering that tickets for Friday nights gig were only available from the Flying Scotsmen on the day it was no surprise that when arriving at barely 7:30 there was already a small queue forming outside the scotto.

At around 8:30 the supporting dj’s started up, providing some great background music whilst everyone caught up with each other after the working week. Not long after this the event was announced a sell out. With the crowd starting to grow so too did the energy from the decks with ‘pump up the volume’ being dropped for the first of many times for the night.

Out in the velvet lounge Lo Key Fu started his first live set of the night at around 9:30 playing a set of dark abstract beats to a small but appreciative crowd. As the crowd in the scotto grew and grew the velvet lounge proved to be a great escape for some extra room and somewhere to sit down for a moment.

Back in the main bar area the DP’s arrived on stage early at 10:20 grabbing the mic to make sure that everyone was ready for the set they were about to lay down. Straight away they raised the tempo in the room jumping into a block party throwdown full of slick scratching to rival anyone. Shortly after the DP’s commenced, the dancefloor (if you can call it that) was rampacked with barely enough room to move. When the DP’s dropped fav M.O.P.s ‘ante it up’ the crowd somehow managed to get their hands in the air for appreciation. The DP’s seemed to be keen on dropping samples throughout the night to provide a hint of what was to come with the first examples of this being ‘Insane in the membrane’ which wasn’t played in full until over an hour after first being sampled. With the amount of energy being generated from the decks and the dancefloor, the scottos windows were starting to fog up making it difficult for the many passers by to see what was going on inside.

The Dynamo Productions have a strong appreciation of mowtown and soul music and unlike many dj’s who will drop the odd soul track here and there the DP’s were not afraid to go on extended soul sessions throughout the night. The first slab of soul that the DP’s played was a highlight as they scratched there way through 20 odd minutes of old school soul while not letting the tempo from the block party hip hop drop a notch. As the DP’s played their own ‘Showtime’ the set transformed back into the hip hop phase.

Moving away from the soul tip the DP’s made their way through many varied tracks ranging from People under the Stairs ‘The Cat’ to Soft Cells ‘Tainted Love’ to The Troggs ‘Wild Thing’.  One of the highlights of the night was the mash up of ‘Kelis’, ‘Michael Jackson’ and ‘Prince.

Out in the velvet lounge at around 11:30 Lo Key Fu was playing his second live set for the night. This time the set was more dancefloor orientated with some excellent tekky breaks being played. However it was clear that this room was destined to be a chill out room with punters happily relaxing in the comfy surrounds while the hectic dancefloor in the scotto remained full to the brim.

At 1:00am the crowd was starting to thin out, but the DP’s were still keen on rocking it with many late highlights including Missy Elliot over AC/DC’s ‘back in black’, White Stripes, and Stevie Wonder’s ‘Superstitious’. After three hours the DP’s stopped spinning the wheels of a set which covered a huge spectrum of music and was definitely one of the better hip hop sets seen in Perth for a while.

The only negative for the night is the lack of room around the decks created by the bar being strategically placed in the middle of the dancefloor. The Flying Scottsmen is a fantastic pub and would have been the ideal venue for the night had it not been a sell out, but perhaps a larger venue would have been more ideally suited. However the excellent set from the DP’s combined with the friendly and up for it crowd and pub price drinks made the night one to remember with many people eagerly awaiting the next installment from the DP’s.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
