What better venue for Dynamo Productions to play than the Chinese Laundry? The cycle was definitely set to a hot wash for the night – the crowd was heaving from the beginning of the night, and there was a sense of recklessness in the air. Or maybe that was just the couple I saw just inside the door who apparently thought they were in a hotel room! The last memory I had of Dynamo Productions was sticking my head briefly into the back of the dance hall, whilst doing the rounds at a Livid festival several years ago. Hardly does them justice, does it? So I decided to find out why such a broad range of people rate them so highly, and catch their Good Vibes gig. And there was good reason to have high expectations. The two Blighty-born men behind the Dynamo moniker – Andy Smith and Scott Hendy – have a formidable record collection. The legend goes that when a key figure from the music industry visited Andy at his London home, he couldn’t even get in the door because of the amount of records blocking his way! The Funktrust boys – Will and Aaron – set the scene nicely, with their trademark party beats. They teased with some undercurrents of hip-hop, and the female MC was great for extra ambience. At 1.30am, it was time for Dynamo to be re-acquainted with a very appreciative Sydney audience. Within ten minutes of them taking the reins, the dance floor was like the proverbial sardine can. They were relentless, dishing out a blend of scratchy hip-hop, breaks, funk and even some reggae thrown in for good measure. I am a terrible trainspotter, but I do recall a particularly intriguing mix of the White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army. The Dynamo boys played a solid two and a half hour set, and they accomplished the rare feat of keeping the crowd on their feet for the entirety of their set. I was pleased to see that the Laundry handled the crowd size better than they have in the past, when they have an international playing. Although perhaps this was because the punters were a bit more mature at this gig, both in age and attitude? I am so glad I broke my winter hibernation to come out and see Dynamo at their best – look out for their new album through Intertia soon!
