After a slight miscalculation as to the location of the Phoenix I made my way down into its dark surrounds to be met by the sounds of Deft. The early tunes were on a hip hop vibe slowly warming things up for an already good sized crowd. As the time moved on the tunes headed into more booty like territory. All the classics came out including a personal favourite of mine Ass & Titties.
Next up was Marshall with a birthday special 5yr techno retrospective. All his favourites from his years behind the decks came out. Highlights for me were The Bells from Jeff Mills, a techno remix of Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics and even some De La Soul. These classics and others got the dance floor filling and gettin down! Marshalls set was top class and set the night up for the wide range of styles to come.
Gmo was next into the hot seat and by now the room was filling up very nicely. The booty flavour returned after a brief excursion through the Radiohead track Idioteque. (All though this may have been at the end of Marshalls set. The night becomes a little fuzzy from this point on!) We got a reprise of Sweet Dreams but with a more bootified flavour. The floor was really rocking now just in time for the entry of Kemik.
The change of pace was noticeable but the tuneage remained top notch, including some Lush Puppy amongst others. From talking with others later in the night Kemik and Paul Blackout were the standouts with the floor full and appreciative at the variety of sounds they were pumping out, ranging from hard tech to drum n bass and the odd Ministry remix thrown in.
As the fog began to clear it was to the sound of HpS? that I found myself grooving to. Due to some equipment issues it was with a DJ set that he rocked the house tonight. However it was the same freight train techno that Hps is renowned for that kept the ever dimishing dancefloor moving. I think at this point in the night the Beyer factor contributed to an earlier than usual exodus.
Despite the diminishing crowd Methodixx still played a typically banging set utilising both CD and vinyl finishing on a high and handing over to Kate to bring us home. She keep a solid vibe to the end and looked as though she was having a great time doing it.
Who Else Could It Be? was a top notch party and big props to the guys running it. (Although I was beginning to worry if Alex would have any hair left by the end of the night!) Bring on the next one and as we emerged it the sunlight there as nothing left to say but “I love the smell of techno in the morning!”
