Originally planned for a deep house party Josh from Independent Reflections stepped in and delivered Kevin Saunderson on the techno tip. With only a week and a half of advertising it was going to be interesting to see how many people the Detroit legend would pull, and upon entering Bohem at about 11.30 my fears were realised that this was going to be a quiet night with only a handful of people littering the edges of the venue.

Bohem was washed out with projections behind the Dj and watery slides cast across the vast ceiling. Subtle lights reflecting a purple glow up the columns. Bohem is also a bitch of a venue for sound but 4 stacks surrounding the dance floor gave an adequate sound for the people dancing, and left the chill out areas quiet enough to have a chat and relax.

Nzed was playing a nice selection of cruisey electro and gltched out acid I was digging it and wished I caught the earlier part of his set. Techione came on at midnight and launched straight into his live set, it’s always a pleasure to watch Dave play. I hadn’t seen him play, for what seemed like years, and I wasn’t disappointed quite hard with lots of tribal rhythm and Detroit inspired pads pity the souls weren’t on hand to see it.

Biz was up next and played a set not too different to what Nzed had been playing earlier - bass driven Detroit style electroesque techno with tastes of the ol’ TB tasty stuff. Biz always plays a superb warm up set to the international like a few weeks ago at Beyer and Mull. It was during Biz’s set that people had started slowly filtering through the doors and come 1 o’clock the attendance was looking quite healthy and the dance floor was looking like it should for Saunderson.

Big Kev came on amid cheers and proceeded to bang out some tough Detroit techno. His mixing seemed a little off but for the most part acceptable. His track selection was all over the place and didn’t flow really well , mixing in straight up techno tunes into diva vocal driven house tunes to melodic techno was a little too up and down for my liking but the crowd seemed to enjoy it.

I didn’t recognise too many tunes as I’m not the world’s biggest Detroit music aficionado but some of the stuff he was playing was really pounding and extremely danceable, though the diva vocal stuff wasn’t to my tastes at all. Come 4 in the morning Dave Slade hit the decks and I was quite surprised to hear him bustin’ out some quality techno not his usual, by comparison, tame electro beats. But the alcohol had gotten the better of me and was time to head home…

Props to Josh for putting together a fine party on such short notice and hearing Kevin Saunderson has put me in the mood for Mills come November. Bring that shit on!
