The night was off to a late start with the MonkeyBar playing host to a double booking – TISM took the before 12 spot while drumnbass filled the venue soon after midnight hit. This meant there was not a lot of time for warming up and the crowd were into it from the outset, when Sardi kicked things off. Loaded Dice had the numbers in the MonkeyBar although the hype for this event wasn’t huge, Nu:tone was visiting Perth for the last stop on his first Australian tour. From the potential Nu:tone has already shown lets hope there is many more.
Sardi eased into the liquid sounds, which pleased the dancefloor as those in attendance came for quality sounds from the dnb spectrum. Tunes from Marky & XRS through Hospital were mixed smoothly as Sardi showed his experience and entertained the heads. High Contrast’s already classic Racing Green, warmed up those on the dancefloor.
Nu:tone took over around 1AM with Mc Wrec calling those on the sidelines to the dancefloor. He kicked things off with some fresh sounds and signaled intent to fill out the dancefloor, moving through dubwise influences including ST.Cal’s Redlight and on to his own remix of Roni Size’ Strictly Social, which attracted the first rewind of the night. Nu:tone rinsed out some upfront dubs interspersed with a few favourites to keep the dancefloor happy. His record box also contained several cuts from a forthcoming LP on Hospital records as announced by Mc Wrec. One of these; a smooth soulful tune Destiny, went down very nicely and it blended well with Mc Fats’ liquid gold tones on Somethings Going On. Nu:tone obliged the crowd with his most famous track; the remix of the disco hit Spread Love, and another track from a forthcoming LP, as Mc Wrec intro’d, a soulful, vocal track Strange Encounters. Nu:tone kept the liquid flowing with new Roni Size and Calibre’s Drop it Down combining nicely with tracks from his own brother, Logistics and, fellow Cambridge rising star Commix. All good things come to an end and after a tight 2 hour set Nu:tone queued up the last one and Mc Wrec asked for appreciation from an obliging crowd.
Concept stepped up after 3 for a slightly darker set as he tried to keep bodies on the dancefloor. Concept fought the ‘after international tendencies’ well and coaxed numbers back off the sidelines for a final jaunt on the dancefloor. He mixed it up a bit too, moving back into some liquid sounds while gaining support on the mic from another new Loaded Dice MC
A new diceman (unfamiliar to me) took control on the decks after Concept, replacing Diamond D on the bill, rinsing out some darker sounds to dwindling numbers. He provided a solid performance and really made me feel inadequate for not providing a name to his set.
Respect to Loaded Dice for another night of quality drumnbass where those heads that came witnessed a soulful drumnbass execution by one of the scenes rising stars. Bring on the end of semester for the uni crew and the return of those summer vibes in time for Sci Fi.
