It was great to see a fair turnout to what was a high quality set, and in the decadence of what is the plush Bohem nightclub. When we got there, supporting DJs Josh O’Dwyer and then Biz were giving it their all. They both played pretty hard techno-driven sets, leaving Larkin’s foray into house, and later funky techno, a little unexpected. Unexpected, but completely welcome!
Larkin’s actual set consisted and started with about a handful of percussive tech-house records. With which was added Green Velvets much acclaimed; ‘The Preacher’, as well as Orlando Voorns; ‘Flash’. This combined with a dollop of tasty house, and half a drop of Donna Summers ‘I Feel Love’, which he mixed Aril Brikhas ‘Art of Vengeance’ out of, which made Larkin’s mix boil. The set dropping out here and there, only to be rebuilt slowly, and then harder and faster. A feast for the imagination and soul-food for the dance-floor, who, incidentally, were loving it.
Detroit born and bred, Kenny Larkin has been in the techno scene for around twenty years. He literally has techno running through his veins. With a proliferation of budding techno artists around the world, Larkin has his roots firmly set in the tradition. Beginning his music career in the early nineties Larkin has racked up techno productions which have achieved cult status.
His productions under the moniker Dark Comedy (a collaborative effort with the likes of Richie Hawtin and John Acquiviva) have become, like his other works under the names Pod and Yennek, ‘must-haves’. His first full length album, Azimuth (94), and other productions like Catatonic (94), have made Larkin instrumental to the techno movement. Of late, he has a production called Narcissist (04) on the PeaceFrog label – check it out.
Last time Kenny Larkin came to Sydney his gig was shut down due to noise complaints. Kevin Saunderson, who he was touring with, blew the roof off Sega World before Larkin had a chance.
Also a revered comedian Larkin saw the lighter side of it and promised he’d be back. On Saturday Larkin was back and he showed us why he has come to be such a respected DJ and producer.
Diverse, spectacular, beautiful. Words still cannot completely describe it. All in all a great night – and congratulations must go to all involved in making it happen.
