Terry Atomic Hooligan was on the bill again to rock perth for a second time this year. Backing up with SOTO – Sonia and Toby – the Botchit Breaks duo.

I arrived at the venue around 12:30 after dozing off at home in front of the tele. In the downstairs area of the Big Apple were the Beat Slappaz – Juxtapose and IanG rocking to a small but intimate crowd. Juxta was behind the decks with Movin the Hype track boomin over the PA – I took a quick stroll upstairs to see Echoic who was playing the same track . After I found out that SOTO wasn’t to be on for another 15 min or so I went back downstairs to catch the end of the slappaz set. Heavy tunes were being rinsed out in the form of Deep Impacts Carpet Muncha.

Back upstairs SOTO were stepping up with Sonia on first opening with Breaknecks Uplink. Sonia didn’t hold back either pumping out bassline thumper after thumper. Toby then stepped up and dropped the new plump DJ’s track – Bullet Train before rocking out with the Phat Planet Booty. Sonia jumped back on and gave the already loud sound system a workout with BLIM’s Blame and Baobinga’s Line Like This.

Gully kept the beats flowing hard and the basslines deep, in much the same fashion as we’ve come to know and love, keeping the crowd fired for the evenings second headliner. Terry “Atomic” Hooligan stepped up to rousing applause as etched (or maybe not) in everyones memory was the corker of a set he brought out months before. The skills of this man are truely jaw dropping to watch. His creativity behind the decks is second to none and his improvisation skills show that he is truely doing most things “on the fly” so to speak. One particualar point of his set, his CD player started skipping quite badly , most dj’s would have just faded out and dropped another tune in . In no sooner than 3 seconds , Terry had cued up his next record and was scratching in time to the skips making a beat out of the skips and the vinyl before dropping it in! As one punter said to me “Its not how it fucks up , but how you FIX it” – amazing stuff. Hooligan weaved his set on the harder vibe and the party vibe going through tracks such as Deep Impacts Bass trap and the Another Homocide Bootleg , All in Check , before finishing up with the Underworld booty of Cowgirl – with a multitude of scratching and juggling in between. Amazing.

Overall a good night. A good crowd was present but spread out in both rooms which took away from the vibe methinks – personally it didnt seem like a good idea to split the 2 rooms into 2 breaks rooms. Props to the WCBC for putting on another quality Backbeat.
