Walking briskly in the Saturday silence of New Years Day, I was excited but anxious about what was coming my way. Would this day see the start off of my new year resolution a success? Or would it see me wondering if I should have stayed in bed, recovering from last night’s disaster? I arrived to see that the Greenwood Hotel was somewhat …dry. Expecting it to be packed, people were spending their time sitting, and noting their surroundings. It took a while before people started to find a familiar groove, a familiar rhythm…
I arrived with my crew wanting to continue the festive party season from the night before, as I am sure every other person did (actually it was more like I was praying that this would be my savour from the night before…hands up whose New Near Eve sucked!) But I wasn’t going to call it quits after one night, that’s not what Sydney people do! They continue their thirst for that soulful, heart pumping, dirty bass - that thrilling, ass shaking, I-love-you-DJ music.
One friend said, “don’t miss PTY LTD!” And their butt shaking, jazzy, funkdified percussion had people salivating for more. Their rhythm and energy resuscitated me out of my hangover, and gave life to those little dancing feet.
Roaring to bring my blood alcohol level up I floated in and out of the bars and headed into the small, but funky cocktail room. Tayo was dropping some sweaty, drink-spilling breaks onto the floor. This was crazy, maniac’s were scaring poor Tayo. All he wanted to do was stop the needle skipping and play some kick ass tunes… well I was impressed. It was the first time I had heard him and I wouldn’t mind seeing him again.
But I have to let you in on a little secret… I was mainly there to see one guy. One dark, predator-crazed dredlocked DJ. Lucien Foort. It hit 8pm and the floor was not nearly stampeding enough, this guy absolutely rocks the house! His classic combination of deep, funky, electro and progressive had me in a frenzy. Alter Ego – Rocker, a new favourite with DJs, slipped in well, as did the King Unique remix of Chable & Bonnici’s Ride. Tune after tune was hitting me hard, and drink after drink was hitting me harder. I was out of control, but I was loving it! This man made my night.
It was hard to stay in the one place to listen to one thing for more than a few minutes. Brief transitions while looking for friends saw me grooving in and out of the courtyard to some of Kaskade’s quality productions and Phil Fuldner’s electrified sound, and the place was packed. It can be a hard task to choose, with there being so many rooms, so many people, and so many styles – Sounds catered for everyone.
People say that Field Day was the place to be, but I say it wasn’t. Sounds has proven to be the location to be after a long weekend of hard partying, and even though it was a Saturday today it proved no difference - Sounds is Sounds! Sounds will always be that place of getting together with friends, enjoying each other’s company and grooving with a drink in hand, soaking up the Sydney sun. I wouldn’t have wanted to be anywhere else on that Saturday.
So a thankyou to Sounds as you provided everyone with room to dance, room to open up, and room to make my new years resolution begin… to have fun!
