Start with a sunny Summer’s day, mix in three different stages with musicians playing varied genre’s from the dance music spectrum, add a perfect natural venue overlooking the Swan river and combine with good company and you have the perfect ingredients to kick off the new year at ”Sunshine People.” The main stage of the event had French house pioneer’s DJ Falcon of Daft Punk fame and DJ Zdar of Cassius, funky house band Crazy Penis, and breaks master Adam Freeland as well as some of Perth’s hottest local talent. Main stage had the Swan River as a backdrop and could be viewed from many different angles of the venue resulting in a tiered effect of a small amphitheatre when the crowd was packed.I couldn’t help but get excited walking through the gates and feeling the celebratory vibe of the crowd at such an early stage in the day. Perth local Dazz K opened the main stage with his breakbeat talent served up monthly at his “Bumpa” night at Heat nightclub.  Buex took over with the still small crowd in true breaks style while DJ Philly picked up the set and Signal Drivers, from the local dnb and breaks scene, finished off the Perth talent. Signal Drivers provided some older classic songs infused into their tracks such as Cypress Hill which proved to be a theme throughout the day on main stage with different DJ’s going back to the classics.DJ Deekline and his production partner the Wizard served up some heavy nu school breaks with a varied set to keep people dancing at the relatively early timeslot. A decent crowd of punters went wild to the live mixing of the original track of “Outta Space” by Quorthon while the dirty mix of Sir Mix A Lot’s “Baby Got Back” was a surprising and original idea to add to a set. Later when speaking to the Wizard he added the track goes along with the ‘booty’ theme on the duo’s recent unreleased work. The superb vocal infused breakbeat and classic tracks the duo utilised was a perfect lead-in to the next set.DJ Falcon of french house duo Daft Punk fame provided many classic tracks in his set which is no surprise considering he is a respected pioneer of the scene. The set was underpinned by solid percussive rhythms, catchy melodies and pure funky house as the crowd got considerably bigger and people started dancing madly. Tracks from the Detroit Grand Pubah’s were played alongside Underworld’s house anthem “Born Slippy” and the upbeat remix of “Don’t Want No Short Dick Man.” DJ Falcon and DJ Zdar have worked on projects together and headlined many different Aussie events and I can see why as their music while not the same compliments one another.I was starting to worry Crazy Penis were not going to perform after there was a considerable delay in between artists. There seemed to be problems with the sound as concerned technicians rushed about onstage. I along with the now massive audience of keen fans all waiting patiently yelled in excitement as Crazy Penis finally graced the stage, and boy were they worth the wait! The six piece ensemble from Nottingham didn’t disappoint as they went straight into a polished set performing many of their songs from their third album “24hr Psychedelic Freakout.”Lead singer Dannielle Moore is a true entertainer and a surprising character, dressing and acting like a 70’s funk/disco queen. Moore knows how to get a crowd going as she danced and spoke to the crowd, a clear highlight of the set was when she encouraged the crowd to sing along to their standout track “Beautiful People,” with laid-back pop melodies the track sounds crisp and even more groovy live. As the sun set and the air cooled on a beautiful hot day on Mulberry Farm, Crazy Penis provided the perfect soundtrack to the first sunset of the year.Moore left the stage as the other five members played an instrumental track laced with soul and rolling dance grooves. As soon as she returned the lights on stage were turned on creating a perfect backdrop for the stage and the music got considerably heavier with deep house rhythms resulting in a very excited crowd. A standout track was the groups remix of Blakkat “Rite Place” which is featured on their latest album. A few of the tracks played have not yet been released which is encouraging as their fourth album is reportedly going to be released very soon and if these tracks are anything to go by, it could even surpass their latest work. Now that it was completely dark and Zdar of French house duo Cassius was on stage there was no stopping the now well and truly packed crowd from dancing. I found it extremely hard not to move to the finely calibrated roar of house Zdar provided along with constantly unwinding rhythms with banging vocals. Playing classics such as “The Sound of Violence” however neglecting to play Cassius’s original anthem “Cassius 1999” Zdar played a spectacular and varied set. His original days as a pop purist could be heard with his disco loops and filtered grooves while his hip hop influences were heard with fat bass lines, big backbeats and funky melodies. While Zdar isn’t one for stage antics to get the crowd jumping you could tell the experience behind the music biz pioneer as he has been in the industry since the late 80’s and this was evident in his superb set.Closing an incredible New Years Day Adam Freeland had the envious position of finishing off an already ecstatic audience and perfect day. Clearly Freeland was enjoying himself on his third visit to Perth in two years as he jumped around with enthusiastic stage antics getting the crowd into a frenzy as he dropped his famed track of last year “We Want Your Soul.” The song from the album “Now and Them” got rave reviews last year for its sheer intensity and vocal subtext with clear political motives against corporate America. No one wanted the set and day to end including Freeland as his set screeched to a halt when the organizers cut the sound abruptly leaving Freeland and the crowd with disappointed faces. Freeland, complete with bottle of vodka, jumped off the stage signing autographs and speaking to fans, what a great guy! I guess all good things must come to an end as everyone realised the day was over however the party could continue with a free after party at Monkey Bar in Perth until 6am, don’t let New Years Day stop and hello 2005! What a great start to a new year.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
