Heat nightclub has developed a reputation for itself as the place to go for punters who want something slightly less commercial but still enjoy the frills seen in the larger clubs such as a top quality sound and lighting setup and good bar service. Last Friday saw Victorian DJ Julian Reynolds make the journey west for Omega’s most recent Trancefixion instalment and promoter Huebor’s birthday celebrations.

Neil Bamber opened the night’s proceedings at 10pm with a cruisey progressive house and breaks set featuring tracks such as Dousk – Pa Dida, which went down well with those coming through the door and set the mood for the trancier music which was to follow.

Trance newcomer Ziad followed on next and increased the tempo somewhat, taking the music in a more uplifting direction. Ziad played some crowd favourites such as Andy Moore vs Adam White – White Room and Skin – Faithfulness (Tiesto Mix) and maintained a good standard of mixing throughout his set.

Lanithium stepped up to the decks next and played one of the stand out sets of the night. He continued with the driving melodic style of music that had been set down in the previous set, playing tracks such as Cape Town – One Way Roads and Airwave – Save Me with very smooth mixing accompanying his track selection.

Julian Reynolds was next up and played a very solid set featuring quite a few trance anthems which were popular with (the albeit small) crowd, opening with Tomcraft – Loneliness and then following on with tracks such as Delirium – Silence (Filterheadz Mix) and Above & Beyond – Noone on Earth. Reynolds blended trance of the uplifting variety together with progressive which made for a thoroughly enjoyable set.

The next advertised set on the lineup was birthday boy TrainwreckaH (aka Huebor) vs Julian Reynolds, but due to the small turnout a decision was made to put Big John vs Julian Reynolds on from 2:30am. From here the music became more like a hard trance set and while both DJs may be good in their own right, their two different styles didn’t complement each other very well.

TrainwreckaH must have summoned some Dutch courage before taking to the decks around 3am, managing to get a few tracks in before Heat had to close early and gave an impressive performance considering he had been celebrating his birthday at the bar all night.

Omega: Trancefixion was a night of quality music, let down only by the small turnout. Timing of smaller events in Perth seems to be of critical importance and the fact that this event was squished between Sunshine People on New Year’s Day and Summadayze on the Sunday no doubt had a negative impact on crowd numbers. Hopefully, with continued support for nights such as these we can see bigger crowd numbers in the future.
