The Supreme Court Gardens was the tranquil settings for this years Summerdayze event with many punters wondering how it would hold up. Sweet tunes, lush surroundings, a pleasant swan river breeze and Toohey’s Extra Dry in “Plastic that looks like glass bottles” is how I sum up Summerdayze 2005 as a whole. 3 tents spread out all within comfortable walking distance of each other all with a decent variety of music across all three to keep the peace – Bass ‘N Breaksdayze Tent – was supposed to be Breaks/hip hop and … Drum and Bass – but no there was Tech, there was house, there was even a little bit of Trance. The local lads got the innings underway before international’s Moguai, Deadly Avenger, Cut La Roc and Krust and Die took the inning’s to infinity and beyond for the day with a stomping variety of rock infused breaks , hip hop , Tech house and Drum and Bass to a small but intimate crowd all day long.

I arrived at the venue with two entrances to all for more breathing space with regards to queues as was the niggle with Mulberry on Swan the week before. The Bass N Breakz dayze tent that was to spend pretty much my entire day in was already pumping to the tunes of local Drum and Bass international – Greg Packer – along with the melodic yet rhythmical MC’ing of Assassin. Pendulum is the flavour of the DnB scene currently and Packer wasted no time getting the crowd going with their remix of Ed Rush & Optical’s Bacteria and their own “Kingston Vampires”. Prior to the pair was another local DnB/Breaks figure head – Echoic who was filling in for the dentalised Gully. It was clear that the size of the tent was not big enough to handle the full D n B contingent that was there as it was spilling over ever so slightly to the edges of the tent, this was again evident later on in the day for the internationals.

First up for the main acts was German Breaks producer/Dj Moguai. Reports from contacts over east hadn’t rated Moguai too highly from his tour earlier this year (which skipped Perth)  and it was with low expectations that I approached his set and with that, probably made his set a pleastant surprise. Starting off with the Age of Love Bootleg “Age of Punk” , Moguai (bearing an uncanny resemblance to Hyper) laid a rock tinged set of breaks that got the crowd amped early in the day. His own tracks “Get on” and “U know Y” were featured through out his set , along with the autobots remix of the track of the day it seems – prodigys  “Outta Space”. Moguai also managed to pull off what Adam Freeland had tried a week before only to get the sound turned off due to noise restrictions – a proper breaks mix of Blur’s Song 2. Moguai’s mixing was crisp along with his track selection which the crowd appreciated. SCAM’s 2003 release “Killer” got a good response from the crowd as the distorted bass thumped over the system as well as “Punx of Rock” which is an old Perth favourite. Moguai finished up to huge applause as many , including myself were pleasantly surprise at the vibe he managed to create so early in the day which set the arena up perfectly for the acts to follow.

Deadly Avenger was up next with a hip hop set – which unfortunately clashed with the Main Stage Act that most people had come to see – De La Soul – which made numbers slightly dwindle within the tent, but nonetheless the vibe was still electric as Damon “Deadly” Avenger whipped through hip hop classics such as Rappers Delight and California. His selection was perfect again weaving in and out of tracks, teasing the crowd with snippets from others , always keeping them guessing. Dee Aye then bought the pace up to breakbeat in order to accommodate for personally my most anticipated Dj for the day – Cut “Lee” La Rock. As prodigy’s “Outta Space” – this time the Deekline Remix – rang out as his last track he grabbed the microphone to let the growing crowd know that Cut La Roc was from the UK and yes he was indeed in the house.

Mr “La Roc” opened his set with probably the biggest breaks anthem in anyones language – Rennie Pilgrems massive Agatha stomp mix of Zero’s “Emit Collect”. My first thoughts were “Geeze we’ve heard this a trillion times before – I hope this isn’t another ‘best of’ Breaks set. But then I cast my mind back to his awesome set at Belvoir two years before for “Delerious” where he blew us away with some awesome scratching and sampling using the 1000’s . Sure enough he didn’t hold back, and was scratching, cutting and dicing his way through most of his tunes which is always a fresh change from the normal. The diversity that La Roc showed was well received in the crowd as he crossed genres as easy as the errors in a chicken crossing the road to get to the other side. Plumps remix of Push up , along with Underworlds Cowgirl all got feet moving as well as the darker side of breaks – Freestylers remix of Freq Nasty’s “Brooklyn to Brixton”. La Roc then took the mood to a 4/4 tip playing a bit of tech house and prog to mix the vibe up a bit before coming back to breaks with Jammin’s Holdin On, finishing on Drum and Bass to allow for V recordings Krust and Die to rock the Kazbah till close along with MC Assassin.

Krust & Die had the room rocking with their “Wibble Wobble” influenced drum and bass – as some mentioned – with punters overflowing either side of the tent. Krust & Die weaved through their set dropping plenty of fresh dub plates straight from the UK which had the DnB massive “reaching for redbacks” all night. ‘photek & die – thunder’ was well recieved as well as some MC Talia to keep the ladies a groovin.

Meanwhile, Greg Packer and MC Assassin were treating one lucky punter who had missed their set earlier on in the day to a freestyle beatbox/rapping set which really made the dudes day. I was lucky enough to be sitting in the vicinity of this.

Overall Summerdayze prooved to be another standout day from the summer festivals and rounded up a different vibe from Sunshine People and Science Fiction. The only minor gripe I would have with the Bass and Breakdayze tent was the actual size as many were left boogying on the outside. Other than that top sets from all the Dj’s as well as the variety that was present amongst the sounds coming out made it an enjoyable day for myself as well as many others.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
