Another Saturday night, another offering of quality music from the movers and shakers at the Chinese Laundry. Not content with putting on one of the most consistently good Saturday nights in Sydney (if not the most consistent), Good Vibrations gave us a live band who are quickly going places in PTY LTD and one of the masterminds behind the pioneers of hard lounge (no I didn’t make that up, and yes my tongue is in my cheek), Chris Todd of Crazy Penis.

The powers of these two combined, not to mention the appeal of the always on point residents, was more than enough for me to take up the offer of free entry in return for approximately 400 words of party assessment. Getting to the Laundry with moments to spare before the banana bending trio were about to hit the stage (or roped off area at the end of the Laundry), we endured the rough and ready house sounds of Jules Beaumont. The dude knows how to chunk it up. Not long later the one more track nod was given to Jules and he wound it down and PTY LTD wound it up.

I knew these guys were good after seeing them support Moloko last year and play at the Good Vibrations festival, but I think they’ve gotten better. Ultra funky bass lines and smooth as silk keys dominate their sound, which is full of energy and enthusiasm. Their music is generally of the house variety, but it’s the way in which the 3 piece play it which gives it the appeal over the standard DJ set. Just watching the drummer go nuts with his mini kit and drum pads was worth the free entry alone. Amongst the 1 hour set were selected tunes from their 2003 album ‘You Should Be Like This More Often’ as well as a newie or two, and they sounded oh so promising.

Have to say I’m not sold on the live act in the actual laundry situation, just too cramped. Only those right in front, or extremely tall, could see the band. And apparently they three QLDers are well worth seeing according to a female accomplice of mine. While PTY LTD were playing I took a stroll to check the locals and as expected Ajax was rockin’ the Cave with his trademark techy-electroy sounds, while Will Styles was doin his funk / breaks thing in the Sand Bar and treated my ears to an dazzling remix of Max Sedgleys ‘Happy’ that I will be tracking down a copy of soon.

Back downstairs at 2am and a small-ish Northern lad who is also know as Hot Toddy kicked of his set with the original version of ‘Happy’, then played RSL’s ‘Wesley Music’, a grooving latin-ish number with a massive chorus line. Chris Todd then showed us took us through the varied contents of his record box and CD wallet. Deep, deep house, deep funky house, hard lounge and disco amongst other things that got the punters moving, while sometimes it cleared the floor. No matter, smiling, sweaty gurners are not essential ingredients for an enjoyable evening.

So once again Good Vibrations served up its weekly dose of clubbing entertainment to an appreciative audience. It’s encouraging to see that weekly clubbing still exists that doesn’t require a the biggest of tunes or the latest in fashion to attract the punters – all it needs it good loud music, dark confined spaces and punters eager to ‘let the night roll on’, to quote legendary Aussie rockers The Angels.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
