The People Get Up team has done it again. Providing Sydney punters with an eagerly awaited Layo & Bushwacka sideshow. Layo Paskin and Matthew Benjamin are, of course, Layo & Bushwacka. The duo are responsible for arguable one the biggest and most widely recognised house tracks of all time; “Love Story”. They are in Sydney as part of the Good Vibration Festival, touring nationally through February. In true Slip Inn style, I glided through the doors at 10:30pm greeted by friendly smiles from the staff. As usual, the “People Get Up” team had decided to charge a seriously wallet friendly. The $20 entry fee kept everyone’s wallets loaded for the festivities inside.
The first hour and a half of my night was spent divided between the ‘cave’, the main room and the lounge / chill area. The cave was serving up some solid tribal and tech-infused beats, but was not as nearly as crowded as the main room. By 11:30 the main room was packed. The two warm-up Dj’s served up a highly respectable blend of house, tech house, electro-house and a healthy splashing of old-skool. The highlight for me being Goodwill who provided a feast of minimal and new wave house. He dropped crowd favorites such as; “Houze” by minimal maestro Steve Bug, “Don’t Hide It” by Alexkid, Josh Wink’s squeaky monster “Superfreak” and the Tiefschwarz’s chopped up version of Kelis’ “Trick Me”. Approaching the end of the set he had the whole crowd jumping; finishing with the illusive “Midas Touch” bootleg.
Layo & Bushwacka took to the decks at 1:00am. They began with some basic, entry level, solid house music, featuring an assortment quirky vocals. Heading towards the middle of the set, some progressive house was on the menu, the crowd receded a bit. The final hour of their set saw them stroll down the funky path again, much to the crowds delight. The floor was filled to capacity, but I must be honest the final hour really didn’t inspire me. The duo were simply purveying monotonous, rehashed house music that I felt like I’d heard a thousand times over. The saving grace was their final track, their hallmark hit (yes, you guessed it) “Love Story”. I exited the club at the conclusion of their set.
All in all the People Get Up team successfully hosted another international DJ. The crowd was super friendly, the entry fee reasonable, the local supporting DJs were quality and in my opinion outclassed the disappointing British duo; that failed to push the envelope into my letter box.
