Saturday night and I’m making my way to the Church for the first time. As we approach the club at approximately 12am there is already a line of punters eager to witness what the night has yet to bring. Personally the night initially began on a low as I managed to find myself in a bit of a conflict with one of the bouncers who took a disliking to my plus one, fortunately enough the lady at the entrance was a lot more perceptive and friendly enough to let us walk right through.
It’s 12:30am and the venue is already reasonably full with people eager to see Cosmic Gate consisting of Bossi and Nic Chagall. I was told they arrived in Perth at 10:30pm and wouldn’t be on till 2am. It’s my first time at the Church so I make myself aware of my surroundings, and observe the club environment. As I head towards the dance floor I’m greeted with the likings of Kenny L who won the award as #1 DJ for WA of 2004 and is also the resident DJ at the Church, spinning a range of pumping tunes to get the punters fired up for tonight’s international act. An hour later and its 1:30am, I now notice the top half of the Church has opened as the club now seems practically full, I make my way towards the entrance to check out the queue, and to my surprise not only is the main queue still crammed with people impatiently keen on getting in, furthermore the VIP queue doesn’t appear to come across any more promising.
It’s now 2am when I notice the music has stopped, and people begin to applaud Cosmic Gate as they prepare themselves for a 2-hour set. Its now that the DJ booth has become the centre of attention from all angles of the club, as Cosmic Gate greet the crowd, and the crowd are becoming overly ecstatic with some excellent MC’ing by Kenny L. If you’re an admirer of hard trance, then theres no justification against not knowing whom Cosmic Gate is. Cosmic Gate are unquestionably icons of hard trance who are responsible for tracks such as Back to Earth, Mental Atmosphere, Firewire, The Truth, Exploration of Space and many more, all of which were huge hits in the charts and also received a great support from many other DJ’s, some which are also considered all time classics of Hard Trance. The punters had come this far to finally see the big boys, who played an astonishing set, they kept the punters on their feet until 4am as it was now time to head of. Some tracks in the play list included
24 – The Longest Day (Armin van Buuren Remix) which was their opening track and their concluding song which was Exploration of Space – Cosmic Gate. The lighting was superb as the lasers filled the club with a pleasant trance ambiance. As Cosmic Gate ended their set, all punters commended them feeling privileged to have had the opportunity to observe such a endowed duo who had come all the way from Germany, to bring Perth, the sound of Cosmic Gate.
It’s just past 4am, as Kenny L hits the decks to take over from Cosmic Gate. I now make my way into the DJ booth for the second time that night and view the punters from this location until it was time for me to head home. Kenny L also played some all time classics including Adagio for Strings – Ferry Corsten Remix. At about roughly 5:15am, resident DJ Riki took over from Kenny L and finished of the remainder of the night, with punters still on the dance floor at 6am. For my first time at the Church I would have to say the club has a nice vibe to it and all punters had a great night out, as you could tell by the smiles where ever I turned. Thanks to the Promoters, Church Crew, Resident DJ’s and Cosmic Gate for such a great night, much appreciated.
