It was a cold and rainy Thursday night in Sydney but that didn’t keep the dedicated drum and bass fans away from the second instalment of Hype, being that it was the first and only Sydney show with the legendary Photek. After the night originally being Photek and MC Armanni it was disappointing to hear MC Armanni had other commitments but Photek still came down to rock the house with his unique sounds and infectious smile.

Doors opened at 10 with Murda 1 first up in the main room. The crowd was a bit thin at this stage but slowly filled as Rollers Music aka Ritual and Alf warmed up for Photek with some fat beats. They were ably assisted by MC SPEx who is not only gorgeous but a fantastic MC and did a great job on the night. As Ritual and Alf wound up, Photek stepped up and the main room was suddenly full. Where did all these people come from?! The crowd literally stood still (except for the girl up the front who was shaking her booty like nobodies business) holding their collective breathes and staring Photek down in anticipation of that first bass line.

As the man who is sometimes called Rupert Parkes dropped his first bass line the place went nuts. He had so much energy behind the decks and he played to the crowd perfectly, applauding his fans and dancing along. He played for an hour and a half and had MC SPEx help him out as well which was great to watch. Photek was followed by Shuey who did an excellent job considering who he was following. Being a Thursday night the crowd started to thin considerably and was left very bare by the time Curfew stepped up.

Home looked great as usual. It will always be one of Sydney’s top venues regardless of whether you love it or hate it. The sound system is top class and was perfect for the gut wobbling bass lines and intense breakdowns being produced. The lighting was also second to none and the guys did a great job of creating the right atmosphere throughout the evening along with the visuals by http://www.babekuhl.com which were excellent.

Props to Hype for bringing Photek out in a great venue with the sound system to do him justice.
