I wish that I could say that one of my New Years resolutions was to venture up to Bayswater Rd every Saturday night: for if it were true, it would be the one New Years resolution that I have kept. I have spent a Saturday night in the majority of the venues more than once (aside from Hugo’s: the weekend I was due there I simply had to clean my bathroom).

This weekend my beer tasting skills were required for Filth @ The World. Approximately 20 of us arrived at close to midnight. As per usual, the street was a hive of activity. There was a small line-up, but that is always a good sign. It was clear from the outset that it was going to be a rather gigantic night. The party was held on the top two levels of World bar, and what a party it was.

I was promised, “An alternative music policy across two floors with gritty electro and tech house in the main room, and the dirtiest garage, dubstep and grime in the other”, and musically, that is exactly what was provided. I spent approximately six hours running up and down between the rooms and the bar. I simply did not want to miss anything.

It was great to see Aiden Mcgee, Muli and Synik heating up the top room. The whole room was jumping all night, and Morph’s visuals combined with the decorations and music gave the room a great feel. One would have thought one room would be busier than the other, but it was not the case. In the Red Room Kodama, Eli, and Zerodub featuring MC Harlequin definitely gave me something to write about. There was not a dull moment.

The highlight of the night for me was the High-Jinks DJ squad. I have been intending to go to one of their nights for a long time. They began at 4am. Normally, my enthusiasm has waned considerably by this time of the night, but as they had made the effort to come from Newtown, I thought I should stay for a moment. Two hours later I was still in fits of giggles (actually, I don’t giggle. It was more unattractive, drunken, 8 pints later guffaws.) I don’t know whether it was Spitchen dressing up in the signage or Simon playing the 15 minute version of Spastik followed by Yazz, but the whole room was going crazy: in more ways than one.

The crowd was unpretentious, and contrary to popular belief, The World is not a backpacker haven. There may have been an abundance of inthemix people there, but they seem to function quite well in the real world. If one did find themselves in trouble, there were hosts with t-shirts matching the signage and decorations to assist. You could not miss them.

Speaking of these hosts, I must say their execution of the night was meticulous. One would think that they had been throwing parties for years. It was clear that a lot of effort and preparation went into the night. There was nothing dirty, grimy or unattractive at all.   The boys did orright. There were only two small elements which need addressing.

Firstly, due to the unremitting dancing, naturally the rooms did become a little humid. Also, it took quite a while to get a drink at points (that is alright though, I just walked all the way downstairs, believe me, I needed the exercise). Both of these things are circumstantial, and easily fixed. If anything it is a reflection of the success of the night, and next time they can put another bartender on, and I can say without flinching that I am sure there will be a next time.
