Aquasky minus Masterblaster? “There can only be one”  “Master Blaster not coming this year” “Masterblaster does the drum and bass side of things and isn’t touring”. These were just some of the quotes flying around before last Easter Sundays return of the masters of breaks and the blasters of drum and bass (pun intended). For the record- there is still 3 members to Aquasky and no, Masterblaster did not leave the trio. Yes they still produce DnB. The only difference this year was, one third of the trio (Keiron) was touring. They have dropped the Masterblaster part of their name for fear of confusion – all it seems to have done is further confuse the punters! (See Truzer’s interview with Aquasky on the front page for clarification).

A year to the day – and a year is certainly a long time in the breaks world – since Aquasky V Masterblaster graced our shores (see above RE name) on Easter Sunday last year. How do you make one of the biggest nights in breaks last year better? Simple ! Crank it harder, add killer dubplates, hoovered basslines with a twist of ragga plus one of the set to be tunes of 2005 from one of our own locals and you have a killer gig.

Fdel was first of the local support from the night. Fdel is known for his funky beats and breaks. With a soon to be released album entitled “Fdel presents Audio Fdelity”, Caz lived up to his trademark beats with a perfect warm up set keeping the vibe funk filled and easy on the ears. Look out for his upcoming Album in the coming weeks!

Micah and Wish were next up backing up from their first Versus set from the night before. How did it match up! Perfect. The driving funky beats of Micah V the cowbell king of ninja’s himself – Dj Wish – put on the perfect pre-set-to-main-act one could have asked for. Wasting no time, Micah and Wish instantly bought the energy level up straight away as it was well known that Aquasky was to pull out all stops. Stantons remix of Rocker, Poxy Music’s “Our Break” and Christian J’s remix of 4 the White Night all featured in the set. An hour and a half later and the dance floor had reached fever pitch as the main act was to come on very soon.

Keiron Bailey, one third of Aquasky, stepped up to the “Wheels of Steel” (again, pun intended) and instantly went into the grimy basslines the trio are known for. Going straight into fresh dubplates, it shows Aquasky have some tastey releases on the go for 2005. Autobots V Factor E’s collaboration entitled “Hardcore Motherf*&er” brought the house down as did Dj Zinc’s “Uptalking” (this time the breaks remix). More dubplate grindy goodness ensued as b-line tearer after b-line ballbreaker was busted out. Breakfasterz “Pressure” with its girly vocal over the blistering bassline got the ladies swooning before Aquasky became the second international to tease the Perth crowd with the Freestylers V Pendulum collab “Fasten Your Seatbelt”. Ed209’s Infectious was recently given an electro-Beeline rub up from Jay Distortionz out on Hardcore Beats and this again was well received by the Ambar crowd. Bailey brought it back towards the end of his set with SCAM’s “Put your Hands Up” and the “Inner City Wife” bootleg before closing on their own remix of “Twist Em Out”. What a set. After an initial hick up on the CDJ’s right at the start (this can be put down to a small crossfader incident involving Wish and a cowbell)  Bailey mixed a tight set with gnarly bassline madness throughout that was lapped up by the usual up for it Ambar crowd.

Rounding off the night was the first of the Heineken Thirst Nominees – Jimmy B. Jimmy is known for his diversity in his track selection ranging from Electro to tech house and breaks. Jimmy started his set off with ILS- Music and kept the tunes deep with Christian J’s Party People remix. Jimmy B capped off what was a memorable evening with high quality local talent, and the best of the harder edged breaks.
