The Platform 12 Party at the Burdekin last Friday was a night not to be missed. The Burdekin top floor was, as we have come to expect from Platform 12 and their friends, a happy combination of good crowd, nice vibe and wicked broken beats.
The evening started out well with a steady stream of punters filling up the floor from doors open. The floor isn’t a huge space but was moving nicely by about 10.30. With such a respectable line up of Sydney’s emerging break beattalent we should have known we were in for a great night. All the tunes were superb. Nice dirty breaks from start to finish. Special ups have to go out to the Impossibles and Joules Fine for their gut satisfying sets also. But here I’ve got to diverge a little and deal with Whomp.
Now for those of you who haven’t heard of Whomp before, I don’t mean the cute monster spelling game at http://www.fekids.com/kln/games/whomp/. I mean the extremely live, extremely deadly breakbeat conglomeration WHOMP! (see http://whomplive.com). They currently comprise of two local Sydney DJs/producers, Matt Goddard (aka DJ Dopamine) and Damien Osborne (aka DJ Dirty D), as well as guitarist Dr Benwahh. Their combination of wild live break beat with a little future funk and techno lifted the crowd to a whole new level. Their set, almost wholly hardware driven (with a little analogue from the good Benwahh), was superb. These guys are definitely ones to look out for. The crowd, now in full swing, went off.
With a good number of punters headed off towards the end of Whomp (no doubt to catch Aquasky at Hijack the same night), but the floor was left just empty enough for the rest of us to really get our boogie on for Clive Morely. Morley, the title act from the UK, was not a fella I’ve heard of before… And having to follow the live energy of Whomp was a tuff call for anyone, but he was a great. A heady mix of mostly nuskool breaks with a great technique that kept everyone left well satisfied and on the dance floor well into the morning.
All the crews that played a part should be well pleased with this event. I wouldn’t hesitate swinging down to the next Platform 12 party. As an evening goes I’ve rarely met such a friendly open bunch of punters. Maybe it was the easy atmosphere of the top floor at the Burdekin, but it was also the good work of those guys in Whomp t-shirts behind the equipment stacks and the punters on the floor! A good clean time had by all.
