Although only my second visit to Home, the air of excitement and expectation leading up to the event was high. Smirnoff ICE, jointly with inthemix, meant the night was sure to be a big one – but could my expectations be met!
We arrived early before the opening time of 11 pm, as Home is notorious for pulling in the crowds. We were not wrong. A large crowd had already begun to form all eager for entry. You could feel the buzz of anticipation in the air.
We were greeted by friendly, helpful staff that took us through into the club and to the bar, leaving us with the lure of buying Smirnoff ICE courtesy of the 2 for 1 drink vouchers. Free stuff, always a bonus!
Home has a fantastic venue set up, open and spacious, with enough cosy seating areas and great views across Darling Harbour, and above all else a quality sound system. Most importantly though, the vibe is electric and contagious, bringing people together just to share the moment and have fun.
The night started off with excellent tunes from both John Devecchis in the Main Room (the first of two sets to be played during the night), and Julian Jason in the Lounge Bar.
John Devecchis never fails to impress with his mixture of funky and deep house beats. The dance area quickly filled up with hungry clubbers wanting more and more, and as the ever growing crowd swelled the atmosphere became alive. A good start to the night! As for Julian Jason, he began slow but momentum soon picked up and the area started to fill. A good funky set was played and I certainly had fun.
The offer by Smirnoff and inthemix of free entry before 12.30 am worked well, as the place filled up pretty quickly in such a short space of time. That said there was always enough space to move around and dance.
The DJs throughout the night never failed to impress, delivering a great mixture of deep, funky,up-front and electro house in both the main room and lounge bar. The DJs not only played good tunes but the interaction with the crowd was excellent. The dance floors were always filled and on occasions I was finding it hard to drag myself away!
DJ John Devecchis second set was played to a packed crowd in the overflowing Lounge Bar. The expression on John’s face showed how much fun he was having, and afterwards he mentioned he had, “played one of his best sets ever”.
For me the main highlight during the evening had to be Danny Bass and The Samba Sound System playing downstairs in the Terrace. Having seen them the previous weekend for the first time at the Heineken Thirst event, I had decided right there and then, along with some friends, that we may just have to become groupies! In all seriousness these guys are a must to see. With Danny’s mixture of old skool and soulful tunes accompanied by his live band. Although the Terrace is small there remained a steady crowd throughout the set and everyone was having fun.
It was one very enjoyable night, and even though I had intentions to leave at a reasonable hour, the time on my watch resembled closing time when I left. The music flowed well with the DJs complementing each other, the dance floor remained packed and the crowd was fantastic with an awesome fun vibe from start to finish.
I am now wondering why I left it so long to return back to Home… it won’t be as long next time, I promise!
