The weather was shocking that night, huge gale forced winds (or something along those lines) and after miraculously scoring a parking spot directly opposite the Monkey Bar I was thinking yep I’m the shit when I realised I had to wait in line and was going to get wet anyway. I thought fair call and then when I was waiting in line some boys announced that it had just sold out so if you didn’t have tickets you weren’t going to get in. Perhaps a tad smug I grinned at my mate and then got to the counter only to be told by the door chick that I wasn’t on the list. Fuck! Calmly I assured her I should be and after a quick call all was well and she stamped us and it was all systems go and I relaxed a bit. Only a few hours at uni I was assigned to be the scribe while the class called out stuff for me to write on the board. Coincidence? Well, probably.

This was roughly around 9.15 and this is going to sound terrible but a local was playing and I have no idea who he was although I can say he did look familiar. (can anyone help me out?) But anyways he was bumping Pharcyde’s – Runnin when I walked in and this pleased me immensely as well as some other more main stream hip hop including some fiddy. The crowd was lapping it up with about equal numbers of people of each sex which was impressive and Scribe commented later that when he was first starting out there was only about 4 dudes at his shows. The dance floor was packed, and I mean packed, so I headed upstairs and this local kept things going until P-Money hit the decks bout half an hour later. The atmosphere had immediately changed and the females were screaming and a few males were yelling out too. P-Money swung into J-Kwon’s Tipsy, coincidentally the state most people were in too. Con Psy and Pnc made their voices known asking Perth to make some noise which they obliged and P-Moneydropped it like it was hot” in return. The bass was overwhelming, even upstairs, and it took me a while to realise my mobile was vibrating. Trying to squeeze in some cheap advertising for his newly released album (here I’ll help you some more) was the words P Money – Magic City on the board which was usually reserved for visuals. P-Money’s actually got some skills though and he scratched the fuck out of some Snoop Dogg with increased intensity and furiousness whilst still keeping the record in time to mix the following track in. Nice one. Con and Psy then launched into 321 an original P-Money track that they do a remix of on his album.

The big board is then featuring a video of Scribe and it turns out it’s his first ever video shot on his mate’s camcorder. And then, the big man himself appears to a thunderous response and to be honest, I was pretty surprised, both at the largeness of the crowd and their obvious enthusiasm, which only seems to be indicative of big name internationals and although technically he is from outside Australia I’ve never really thought of him as being that big and I’m clearly mistaken by the looks of things. He busts out with Not Many which I hate to admit that I love, but the beat is so phat it makes up for the clearly overindulging lyrics. Scribe then spits out some verses which may or may not have been rehearsed but the punters lap every bit of it up. I noted he had also worn his jeans with one leg rolled up that I saw every homie wannabe in America doing when I was there but no one could give a reason as to why they were doing it and his credibility went down a bit in my books. I don’t want to turn this review into a Scribe basher that seems to be the case everytime his name is brought up in the hip hop forums but what is up with the guy. I feel like he has the potential to be not just okay but great if he ditched the clichés and cheesiness and came out with something real. And he said “I got into hip hop when I was around 15 and a few months later my room was covered in rap posters?” Not the same thing dude.

Anyyyways he also did Stronger which he assured us was the last time he was going to do it as he had a new cd coming out too and said and I quote, ”..hip hop is in a state of bullshit, all that bling bling shit” and something along the lines of keeping it real and I found that highly amusing. He finished off with Dreaming, My Lady and of course there were yells for more so for the encore he came back out with Stop the Music. The thing that set this show apart from other hip hop acts I’ve seen lately is the crowd interaction. Without a doubt Scribe loves his fans and between almost every song he described his feelings and his head state when writing the proceeding song which I think is pretty cool. I love knowing what songs mean to a person whether they write them or not. He also acknowledged the crowd and involved them by way of putting their hands in the air like they just don’t care styles. I had and I guess I still have some cynicism as to whether he was being honest or was putting it on for the crowd. I mean every single person who performs a show in Perth always says things like “Perth is the best place I’ve been to, the small city always shows the most love, I love coming here etc” you get the picture and multiply this by ten. In the end I guess it doesn’t really matter as its fair to say Perth loves him. I’ll  give him the benefit of the doubt as he seems to be quite genuine and humble despite the obvious arrogance in some of his music. Go Scribe Stand Up for yaself and don’t let a few people Stop your Music.
