Entering a non descript doorway with random signage via Elizabeth Street we followed the hall adorned with quotes sprayed and tagged, and we’re informed by a b/w A4 that there was a ‘Detour’ to level 3.
So into the lift, more funny quotes, and onto a landing. Left? Right? Let’s try this door, opens! Dum, dum, boum! Was slightly audible so we follow the chalk arrow across an indoor balcony above a deep, dark pit and through door number 2 and onto another landing, stairs? Doors? A hall? Our ears pricked for the right direction to take as we entered a blank door. We were in a great little warehouse space, hidden deep in the alcove of this old Surry Hills building.
The description of the party told of techno and electro. But after 3 or 4 slow hip hop influenced tracks, I think I even heard a Missy Eliot remix, we realised that this was not the case. After grabbing a beer we took our places on some well place couches and took in the vibe. More of an extended house party with the people who lived there and some extras then a banging event, but we were down with that.
After a small set from the primarily hip hop influenced DJ, another DJ jumped on and dropped a much welcomed Sweet Dreams original which was nicely mixed into an Aphex Twin track, but at this stage of the evening things were winding down and we said our goodbyes and went our separate ways.
We had arrived late to the hidden warehouse space but apart from the cool place and vibe of the space there wasn’t much for it. No lighting or props but comfy couches and a large chalk board to make your own decos… An interesting evening.
