Having reviewed Sumo Sonic previously at the World Bar, I pretty much stumbled across the Double D show. I, along with others, found ourselves wanting an encore. So when the opportunity arose to review this trio at the Laundry I more or less jumped at the chance demanding the gig.
That aside I was eager to see what the Cave was offering for the relaunch of the monthly Movement night with special guest DJ Sean Quinn, Melbourne. And if that wasn’t enough local drawcards such as Yogi and Ben Morris were on for the night. The “Who the f**k is Ben Morris” set went down so well at Kink, I was eager to see whether he could live up to expectations.
So it was going to be one busy night and selection would be key, otherwise I wouldn’t only be spinning on alcohol but who was where and playing what was going to be proving a problem. I know a girl can multitask, but we do have some limitations!
It was a cold damp evening, and as we arrived at the Laundry, which was just opening, I am pleased to say the door staff and management remembered us and were as friendly as ever. The night felt quiet for some reason, you can at times just tell how things are going to pan out, but ever the optimist we hoped this wouldn’t be the case.
We headed straight to the main room to see resident and favourite DJ Yogi. The night started off fairly quiet, it was early after all, but for those punters arriving Yogi played to get the room pumping. Yogi’s style is always effortless and I could easily sway to the sounds of his funky beats all night long.
With Yogi drawing to a close, I found myself almost on top of the Double D trio ready for their set. The guys are Dazzla, Daz and Doney, with one on the decks and the other two comprising a mixture of MC, keyboards, guitar and bongos, all accompanying uplifting house.
The energy that these guys have as performers is contagious and they certainly rocked the crowd at the Laundry. Doney, the MC, knows how to work and play off the happy punters with his interactive style, and I can honestly say that the crowd loved it.
I managed to drag myself away for a short time, back to the Cave, albeit briefly. By this time the floor was shaking to the tribal deep rhythms of Sean Quinn. The room was fairly full with a mixture of people creating a pretty good vibe to Sean’s set.
I preferred the main room style, and so heading back for Ben Morris noticed that he’d been replaced for the evening with Bob Frisky. I couldn’t be happier, as Frisky has played at some of the best clubs in England and Ibiza. Most notably Gatecrasher and the legendary Manumission in Ibiza. So the Laundry was truly in for a treat. Nice one!
Bob managed to keep the energy flowing from the already pumped crowd and seemed to be at ease reading the punters and giving them what they wanted. Not one for the out and out vocals or commercial tracks, Bob brought something different to the night dropping big and quality basslines. I would definitely want to see Bob in a bigger club environment to get the full force of his music.
To sum up, the music on the night rocked the Laundry from start to finish. Punters were treated to some extra special talent out there. The DJs played the crowd how they knew best, putting out a good funky vibe for the People Get Up set.
