Alright, so considering Bass Station is celebrating its seventh birthday in December of 2005 I have to question how “Old Skool” includes early to mid 90’s techno music. Having said that I haven’t been to Bass in a while but I was still quite surprised at the genre of music that was played during the evening. With a line up that included Jeremy K, Sean Sullivan, DJ Hellraiser, DJ Compound, Jewelz and the man himself Jason Midro I was all hyped up for a rockin’ night of Hard Trance, Acid and NRG.

Unfortunately I ran a little late and missed most of the first set which I was quite disappointed in as Jeremy K has always been one of my favorite DJ’s to rock with.

Sean Sullivan took over at 12:30 with a large crowd to play too. Although he played a very different style of music to what I am used to hearing from him it was well received by the crowd and the dance floor was getting used by a decent amount of people.

Hellraiser revved up the crowd with his usual intensity playing a well rounded set that included as a high note for me “Chainsaw” which I was used to hearing Midro play. Of course Hellraiser brought his own unique “Dark” Style to everything he played and seemed to really enjoy the photo opportunities.

I also took a moment out to check out Gavin Martin in the side room who I haven’t heard play before but thoroughly enjoyed. His blend of break beats and Psy Trance had a number of people leaving the main room and taking comfort in the slightly less intense atmosphere in the side room.

I didn’t catch much of Compounds set as it was that time of the evening and I decided to go round and get some Happy Snaps of everyone inside and outside enjoying themselves but he seemed to be playing his usual good solid set.

What can I say about Jewelz? From the moment she stepped onto the stage till Jason Midro took over saying that she is the hottest DJ in Melbourne at the moment the queen of the Melbourne music scene accepted nothing less than the best from herself with smooth changes and hard beats she truly took out the MVP award for the evening. Not only did she play one of the most sound and professional sets for a long time but she really was enjoying herself and the crowd lifted up on her vibe.

Jason Midro’s side room set was like nothing I have heard him play before and was very unique but I found didn’t quite compete with what was going on in the main room, however that didn’t stop a number of people chilling out while enjoying the drum and bass.

The night finished off with Midro playing a number of crowd favorites in the main room. Unfortunately for me I didn’t know any of them having not been enjoying the music scene for more than five years.

As always the light show, venue and general atmosphere was fantastic and a credit to the sound of now and bass station crew who work behind the scenes to make it all possible.

I thought that the crowd in general was excellent although a little older than what I was expecting. I didn’t realise that when they said Old Skool they meant Old, Old Skool as in people that have been going out since the 90’s. A few of the regulars that were expecting newish Old School were a bit disappointed probably hoping for something that was a bit more like Bass 5th birthday but the crowd that turned up didn’t look like they could have had it any better.

Four out of five paws. – I had a great evening and although not everyone was impressed the crowd in general seemed quite pleased.

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
