Glitch is a must see party. Although they’re not on all too often, when they are, they certainly go off with a bang! Glitch is a party run by Dave Choe and Matt Aubusson, and has a steady focus on tech house, techno, and German beats. At a past party they threw was for Kompakt king pin, Michael Mayer, he was billed to play 2-4 but wouldn’t get off the decks til we were physically booted out of the place. It was much the same this time with guest DJ Superpitcher to represent Kompakt again in Sydney. Heralded perhaps as the next Mayer, Superpitcher had a lot to live up to. That, my friends, he certainly did!

Having changed venues this time, from Club 77 to Bohem, I was a little worried that the same atmosphere may not be there – but alas, I was not let down by the Glitch boys. I arrived at around 11, since I wanted to catch one of Ajax’s infamous tech sets that I have come to really appreciate since we don’t hear them all that often any more. His set was fairly banging right from the outset, but more melodic perhaps than some of the other DJs of the night. I love the way Ajax just throws on something unexpected. One example would be when, right in the middle of a huge 4/4 beat, he dropped a thumping break beat for about 16 bars, before turning down the bass and subsequently blasting us again with the tech 4/4. Not that a lot of DJs can’t do this sort of thing, but it’s the execution that’s important, and Ajax is always top notch. Unfortunately, circumstances didn’t allow me to pay much attention to Mike Calendar’s set, but it was deeper than Ajax’s and I remember him playing Michael Mayer’s remix of Baxendale “I Built This City for You”, which got a great reaction from the crowd.

Two other DJs who earned my respect in every way on Saturday were Dave and Matt who played a 1 ½ hour warm-up for Superpitcher. As with Ajax, these two were certainly not afraid to mix it up and keep it interesting. The massive basslines, deadly drop outs and mind blowing build-ups were played to perfection on a professional sound system like I’ve never heard in that room before. The first track they dropped was fitting for the night with the Justin Maxwell remix of Dominik Eulberg’s “DieInvasion Der Taschenkrebse” – a track that never fails to get the dance floor grooving. Having been watching a relatively empty dancefloor until these lads stepped up, it was wicked to see the reactions of people as they crammed the space. Some other notable tracks played were Pan-Pot “Popy & Caste” on, Argy’s “Love Dose (Luciano Remix)”, Alter Ego’s “Daktari (Villalobos Remix) and “Abusator” by Sweet Light, all of which had us punters going nuts. I have to admit that these two lads were equally as intense and talented as the main event, and I think the crowd would agree. Dave Choe especially dropped a number of tracks that were simply amazing (and suited to my personal taste!)

Half an hour late at 2.30am, the blonde-haired, bright-eyed Superpitcher stepped up to the plates to a tremendous roar of the crowd! This was the man most of us came to see, and I was keen to hear what he had to offer. Having listened to a few of his CDs and releases, I felt they weren’t especially to my taste, but I had been re-assured by many that his DJ sets were off the hook. Clearly, his Sydney show was no exception. Starting off a little more relaxed, over the next half an hour he built the atmosphere up and up and up until we were ready to explode. At one point I remember thinking “how in God’s name did he just do that?” His set was dark and dirty, but also fairly uplifting, with a definite concentration on bass. I noted quite a few tracks from his Today Mix, such as Nathan Fake’s “Dinamo” and the Wighnomy Bros’ “Wurz and Blurz”. Mr. Pitcher also played a fair few of his own tracks or remixes including “Baby’s on Fire”, his remix of Quarks “I Walk” and M83’s “Don’t Save us From the Flames” which was his last track but unfortunately got cut out early.

With a fantastic presence behind the decks, I was really impressed with his skills and ability to work the crowd. Even on one of the few trainwrecks, instead of letting it fizzle his set, he whacked it on loop and made it a centerpiece of the mix, and if you hadn’t been paying 100% you would have just thought, “wow, that was cool!” A true sign of a DJ is their ability to clear up a mistake, or not make them, and I give him full marks for that! I didn’t sit down once during his set, but when the music stopped and the fat lady started to sing (who was that girl?), I knew it was time to head home.

And so, as the birds started chirping and the runners were already up and running on a warm Sunday morning, I hailed a cab home and went to bed, the music still ringing in my ears. Having met some really great people, and having had some good talks to all the DJs I was pretty impressed with my night out to Glitch. Bohem was done up so nicely, and the sound was probably some of the best I’ve heard, especially for the high ceilings of Bohem. Glitch is a night out that I know I will go to whenever it is on, the lads know how to throw the best tech night you’ll ever find in Sydney!

Nobody has hearted this, be the first Be the first!
