“A pox on you”

With the institution that is Madhatters becoming one of the largest fancy dress
parties in Perth, I was a little worried about the capacity of Ambar to stage such a large
event, but the Ambar crew came up trumps once again. With a large section of the
underground car park open and basically doubling the size of the club while housing a
second stage with spacious dance floor, a bar and a large couch equipped chill out area:
space was not an issue.

Entering the Ambar proper at 11pm, Prizzymodo the hunchback and David “Skelly”
Hasselhoff were entertaining a relatively small crowd in a wonderfully decorated
environment. With stars, witches on broomsticks and castles a plenty the mood of the
night was established from the outset. The boys played a set of down tempo funky beats
and with the Mylos “Destroy Rock and Roll” (Dylan Rhymes Remix), managed to coax 2
construction workers, 3 buxom wenches and Robin Hood onto the dance floor to get the
night underway.

A regally attired FMT followed up on the decks and there was an influx of people to
the dance floor concurrent with the slightly harder, dance-oriented breaks. There was a
huge crowd response to the Plump Djs “Rub Off” which truly got the party started in
earnest.

Come 1am it was the turn of Ambar’s own knights of the break beat table, the
Breakaholics. With Micah (sporting a medieval mullet), Fdel and Ben Mac leading the
crowd through a set of absolute dance floor stompers from the funky, Slyde’s “We love
it”, to the slightly darker, “For the White Knights” (Christian J), the stage was set for a big
display from the nights main attraction.

“Cometh the hour, cometh the men”. The hour was 2am and the men were Ken
Cloud and Sameer Sengupta aka Poxymusic. Opening from behind a specially erected
castle Ambar with their own remix of Freestylers “Get a Life” they made it clear no one
was going to be disappointed. The pace did not let up for the entire hour long set with the
biggest cheers being reserved for their original track “Our Break”. The dance floor was
heaving, the guys were enjoying it and with edgier tracks such as Alter ego’s
“Rockers” (Christian J mix) 2am came all to soon.

Exploring the car park for a much needed rest saw the back stage just as energetic
with the sounds of hard house and techno. I was also witness to a small pot plant fire
that was extinguished by a quick thinking security guard with a bucket of water.

Entering the fray back in Ambar proper, the Nyquist Freaks were keeping the crowd
moving with hard set of heavyweight breaks that would have brought Lennox Lewis to his
knees, and by this stage it looked as though a few of the punters were receiving a
standing 10 count themselves.

Leaving at 6am, with many costumes looking a little worse for wear, the punters had
clearly faired a little better and await with great anticipation the theme for the next dose
of madhatter madness!
